So the HPSP scholarship provides reimbursement for all things deemed required by the school. What if our operative course director/instructor deems loupes necessary? Can we receive reimbursement for our loupes?

The course director is willing to provide an official letter stating that loupes our required.

Yes they will purchase one set of loupes.

i think you can even get them if they're not required, as long as you have a letter. I got reimbursed for buying 5 pairs of scrubs...not a bad deal. It's only required for clinic but its so much easier than dressing up everyday so I just got a letter from a faculty member and got it paid. I think they're giving up the 1k for loupes now right?

I bought Surgitel loupes a year ago and the Navy covered it, I believe they were almost $1000.

it was a few years ago, but my loupes were about $1250 from designs for vision. i'm Army. i don't know of anyone else that got loupes that expensive though.

My loupes were reimbursed in 2003, they were required, but I didn't submit a special letter for them or anything. Just graduated in 2007 and they bought me another pair when I got on active duty. No good on the scrubs, though. We were required to wear scrubs as our school uniform, but they denied it twice. The Navy guys got reimbursed for theirs, though.

All the HPSP programs are exactly the same now. The bonus isn't part of the scholarship so not all branches are required to give it. They had to ask for it to keep their numbers up.

Loupes are reimbursed up to 1000 so if they cost more, its out of your pocket. 5 pairs/$125 for scrubs are reimbursed (thats for the whole 4 years though). If it is required for school, its pretty much reimbursed (minus a laptop and I heard they are working on that).

I'm fresh out of COT and a DS1 so I'm positive on all this stuff.

Well since my recruiter vanished I thought I'd ask you guys -

It's concerning loupes reimbursement. We're having a vendor fair for dental loupes here in another couple days. I know the Air Force reimburses up to 1K for the purchase of loupes, but would I need to wait to purchase them until my scholarship commences in May in order to receive that reimbursement?

I'm on the 3 year scholarship so my benefits will officially start the beginning of May at my school (when I'm considered a D2 for summer classes). Could I purchase them now and still put in to receive the 1K reimbursement in the future? Obviously, I could really use the loupes now for pros. (plus at this fair they're going to be on sale), but if it means forfeiting 1 grand I'd rather wait a month or so to purchase them.

Any comments would be helpful. Thanks!

Thanks!

How is the reimbursement paid? Is it just added to your stipend? How long does it take to receive it from the time you submit it?

the reimbursement came pretty quick. Mine came in a few week weeks I believe on the same day as one of my stipend payments. It wasn't added with the stipend..just two separate deposits. I was pretty impressed how on the ball they were.

It was about 2 weeks later for me from the date I sent it in.
