Rejected but accepted in last choice

I was rejected to my top choices inside my country, but accepted to Mexico. I dont really want to leave my country but its either that or lose a year hoping to be accepted next year and reapplying etc..

Do I have a choice to wait until next year? What should I do in that year out?

I depends on what you feel were the reasons you got rejected at your preferred schools. If your stats are low, then work on improving them. If your ECs are sparse, then strengthen them. If you don't want to invest additional energy in the process, then take the acceptance you have and be a doctor.

I hope to practice US, specifically Puerto Rico . The school in Mexico (UAG) is a last resort for many PR students.

My MCAT was 22 (verbal 6, phy 8, bio 8) and final uni GPA was 3.13 (not sure if relevant since its not AMCAS calculated)

AMCAS stats:
BCPM GPA was 2.57
cGPA 2.81

that was without my last semester that I got 15 creds/ all A's, so according to my calculations, the new stats would be:

BCPM GPA 2.78
CGPA 2.93

Wait a year and reapply. IMG's have a 50% chance of scoring only a fair residency at best, and the odds will only be getting worse.

Your MCAT is ok for PR schools except UPR, but your GPAs are too low... You might need to increase both GPAs to 3.3+... I was told that UAG is an acceptable path for PR residents because they (PR residents) have another pathway to become General Practitioner without taking step1... They just have to take a PR board and then do one year of internship... I don't how true is that...

Looks like your MCAT score is in line with the matriculant averages, but as mentioned above, your GPA needs work. You've already started remediating by earning a high GPA last term. Ideally, you are still in school and might even be able to stay there an extra year, so you can establish an upward consistent grade trend, particularly in upper-level Bio and Biochem classwork.

You might check into whether PR schools have a strict cut off (3.0 is common in the states) that you need to get your GPAs above, and whether you'd need additional postbac or masters work with similar high grades to gain reasonable consideration.

I hope this doesn't come off as naive or stupid, but isn't going to medical school in Mexico worse than going to a Caribbean medical school? Personally OP, I would try again after bolstering your stats.

Depends on what caribbean med school, but yes.

The cutoffs in PR i believe are 2.50/2.75. But still the gpa isn't competitive enough.

Raise both gps to at least 3.2+ and then apply!
