Not trying to be brave nor an idiot 🙂
I just want to let many more people (if) in the same situation like me know that they are not the only one and then we can together strengthen our resume plus application for the next cycle.
Rejection can only make us work harder guys, it can't kill our dream.😉
So this is my 2nd year of applying. My 1st year, i only apply 1 school (in state) and got waitlisted (then nothing happens meaning....REJECTED).
This year 2010: i got a little smarter:laugh: apply like 7 schools:
-Mercer-Rejected (after interviewed)
-CU Co-rejected (my English is bad so they don't even bother)
-Ole Miss (interview on feb 11)
-Charleston WV-rejected (after interviewed)
-New Mexico- Still waiting for a dim future
-Applachain (or something like that) interview on 03/26
-Western New England-Sent my application and hear nothing from them since 😕
So......i guess my future relies on the other 2 upcoming interviews....Hope i do this good, then i can start a thread called:"Dream's coming true anyone?" 🙄
Well, i did ask the schools which rejected a young, talented and a possible Nobel prize claimer (pointing finger at myself) what did i mess up and how to improve my application. If i get the answer, i will post in the forum.

Anyone else wanna step up?
😉

I'm not sure of the extent of your poor english (as you noted), but that is probably the most part of the reason why I think all those schools rejected you.

Wow. You got so many interviews, but all rejections and no holds? Something is definitely wrong with your interview skills/communication. I'm not even gonna ask you what your stats are because they are good enough to get interview invites, but you have to definitely work on your interpersonal skills. The last cycle when I was rejected I know for a fact it was my preparation and lack of communicating skills, I could not articulate my thoughts and answers well.

Mercer was my first choice this year, and thankfully I was accepted after my interview, after I know how bad I did last time, I prepared for my Mercer interview ahead of time and knew what I was going to ASK & SAY!

Good luck with the rest of the interviews!! I have hope for you 😀

Are you sure it's your english skill or you didn't prepare for your interviews... English is my second language as well.

What did you say when they asked you why pharmacy? What did you say when they asked you why their school?

YEah, they interviewed me through phone (cuz i am non-native speaker) and i did poorly. Man, i think i need to improve my communication skill.:xf:

No so many, just 4 in 7 schools i applied.🙂 But because before i applied, i called them to ask "if my stat is good enough to have a chance for an interview" and all of them " Absolutely"

🙁Yeap, you are right! I need to inprove my interview skills.
For the 1st question, my asnwer is really dumb.
For the 2nd question, only Charleston ask me and i don't know what to say: Cuz i applied to the school because they send me a letter to introduce me about the school.

But you are right, i need to prepare for my upcoming interviews.

You're a liar. On-site interviews for prospective pharmacy school students are mandatory, regardless of circumstances. And this applies to every single ACPE accredited school. And all those schools you mentioned are under the umbrella of ACPE. :beat:

Please calm down, Colorado Pharmacy School required all of non-native speaker have a phone interview before they get invited to an on-site!🙂
And...i failed that phone!

Hey Vinapharm, I think you're maintaining a good attitude about all of this. Just keep working on your communication skills, study possible questions from the interview feedback section here on SDN, and even run the questions and your possible answers with someone for practice. Your stats are obviously good enough, just keep building your resume with work experience, pharmacy experience, volunteer experience or what have you, and work hard in your preparation for your interviews. Being a non-native speaker who may not yet have a great grasp on the language for whatever reason, you know where you need to work harder than everyone else, so you need to focus your time on that portion. Again, you have a good attitude - allow this to shine through at your interviews. If you're invited chances are they already like your stats - these schools are now looking for good fits intellectually and, just as importantly, looking for positive individuals that will work hard to succeed and have a good influence on the school's community. Be honest and forthright, and practice enough so that you won't freeze on any question. Even if you do get a question you haven't thought about, take a second to gather your thoughts, and speak honestly. Even if the answer isn't remarkable, allow your personality and positivity to show, as these traits can be just as beneficial. We are dealing with professors and admissions directors yes, but remember these are people too. Sure they will recommend those with the best answers if such a thing exists, but they will also remember those who came across as positive people, essentially people they "liked," as long as their answers were still good if not the best they had heard. Obviously you still need to prepare to a point where your answers are competitive. Just practice with someone who will give you honest feedback and allow yourself to be comfortable - remember that it is just important to show your positive qualities as a person as it is to give an intellectual answer, so allow your personality to shine through regardless of what your answer is. Good luck.

Actually that is not true. They will do phone interviews depending on the circumstances. Maybe not a universal thing but some schools have done it before.

Yeah, not true at all. Skype and phone interviews are actually relatively common from what I've heard, especially for students with significant geographic limitations.

To the OP: There are lists of questions available online that may be asked during interviews. I recommend reviewing these. However, if you can't put together a cogent and well-thought-out answer to "Why pharmacy?" or "Why this school?", then you've got some problems to sort your way through.

Before next year's interview cycle, I would definitely work on improving your English skills. Poor control of the English language can absolutely prevent you from getting into pharmacy or any other professional school.

Do those phone/skype interviews serve as the final interview stage or are they simply determinants of an on-site interview qualification?

I was faster than my shadows. I apologize for that once again.

Mmk, well I will step up. I am quite sure I got rejected from UW. I was in consideration but because my calc I class didn't "meet their requirements" (and I am taking 18 credits so I can't take the one they want) that puts the nail in the coffin for my chances. But hey, its my first round of applications, and stuff like that happens. Am I going to let it ruin my day/week/month? No way, its just an application for a school that gives the same pharm.d as any other school. 🙂 just gotta look past it and keep moving forward.

I too was rejected from CU CO after the phone interview, although I've been living in America for the past 14 years (i'm 21). I just had my in person interview with Wyoming today (about 3 hours ago) and I have the feel the same thing happened. I was so nervous that my mouth completely dried out. I kept stumbling and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get what was in my head to come out of my mouth. I have 2 more interviews coming up later this month in Nashville and Iowa so I'll try to practice but still not sure what to do. I can't stop my mouth from drying out, but I'll try.

Oh man, i was there so i understand your feeling. Maybe we should practice talking in front of the mirror😉

Thanks for sharing, Ben!
Oh, i think this info may make your day brighter. I was in this Mississippi interview and the Dean told us that there was that guy applied for 90 schools (ninety, 90, nine and zero)😱 Meaning that he spent like 5000$ for the application fee and no school accepts him.
Hope we can do it better next time!👍

My friend only had a phone interview at a new pharmacy school that was opened a few years ago.

It's times like this when people need to re-evaluate their career plans. Sure, hard work and determination are required in most situations, but dreams don't always come true and at what point do you stop and say, "okay, I'm not going to put the rest of my life on hold for something that isn't going to happen?" I think some of the smartest people are the ones that realize, "well, this really doesn't seem to be the path for me; hopefully, something else will be revealed." Sometimes reality is a long time coming, but applying to 2/3 of the schools in the nation is nuts.

You told one of the schools you only applied because they sent you a brochure? Ouch.

As for the English thing, there is at least one person in my class that is nearly impossible to understand most of the time so it might be more than just the language barrier.

Thanks for sharing, Ben!

From my own experience, if you are good any school are willing to accept you..

The school that didn't accept me is Campbell University, they put me on waitlist... I wasn't planning to attend this school even thou if they accepted me....

How do you get denied for all 90? Was he egotistical? A jerk? Was he the dude of Grandma's Boy that acted like a robot?

So far no rejections this year yet. I just got my first interview, which will be at the end of this month (I only applied to 2 schools this year). However, the last time I applied was 2 years ago and I did apply to about 10 schools without getting any interviews and being rejected to all. I have saved all the rejection letters as my motivation. I've been rejected by both of the programs I applied to this year twice before but the particular school I will be interviewing at is actually one of the best programs in the nation. Truth be told I was a little hesitant to send my application back this year for fear of rejection again but I was happily surprised to an invitation for interview. Hopefully the interview goes well and I can get accepted, because it will be proof that any obstacle can be overcome. It is a very long time in coming since I've been working to strengthen my application for 4 years so don't give up.

Hehehe who knows! I have a friend, she applied for 30 schools (med school) and get rejected by all.
There are ppl out there really try to increase the odds you know🙂

I gotta say-- that phone interview was way harder than my USC interview - and way longer

I got rejected with no interview to Pacific in oregon. Probably because I applied on the deadline. I set the rejection letter on fire.

Lol, good method! Better than ingest it like i did

Man I would have kept that, and when you got your Pharm.D, I would have sent it back with a post it note and a photocopy of your degree with the note "Thanks, but I got it anyways."

Thanks Vinapharm for sharing your story.
I assume you are Vietnamese as I am. I applied last year to two schools in Iowa, got interviewed and rejected. This year I am also applying to the same two schools. Interviewed at one, which is also the school i am going to for undergrad. The other interview is this saturday.
Hoping for the best. We will all make it.

I went to Campbell interview, and the guy said that there were 2 people he knew that applied to ALL the medical schools, and got rejected. The first thought in my head was $$$$$$$$$.

If your english is so bad that schools instantly rejected you, how were you able to pass Public Speaking class, which is a requirement at most pharm schools?

Just wondering 🙂

It's definitely possible to pass a Public Speaking class without speaking English well. My public speaking class required 6 speeches, over various topics, but we were primarily graded on the coherency of our arguments versus our actual ability to communicate. Therefore, it's plausible for ESL students to pass Public Speaking with a poor grasp of English.

Besides, that's why they interview students, to view their ability to communicate. However, if I was told by numerous schools that my grasp of English was poor enough to be rejected after a phone interview or an in-person interview, I'd rectify that before pursuing a career in pharmacy instead of applying to numerous schools in the hope that one school will overlook that serious flaw.

Back to the thread at hand.

I got rejected by UIC.

Pricks.

That is all.
