I just got word from my first interview, rejected at UVM 🙁 I have been applying for four years now, this is the one that really hurts. Worst day of my life thus far. 🙁

This is my first year applying (so I don't pretend to know what you have been through), but I could deferred by one of my favorites. It stinks, but we just have to realize we can't do anything now. Plenty of other schools. (Not that I haven't been kicking myself for saying stupid things in the interview, etc.). I hope it turns out well for you.

Fortunately, I had NYMC earlier, and a couple more interviews coming up. But this has just killed my confidence, I thought the interview went well.

Thats crazy. If they chose to interview you that early, its clear that they liked you. At the very least you should have been waitlisted. On the brighter side, I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and maybe had you been accepted to UVM, it might have kept you away from the school you truly should be at, so cheer up. And think about it this way, if there were no such thing as bad news, then good news would have no meaning, it would just be news; this is all going to make you feel better when you do get that acceptance. So here's to good news in the future !

I remember last year, I interviewed at UVM and thoght the interview didn't go well. The interviewer asked maybe four questions and then was like, "We're pretty much done, do you have any questions?" It lasted for a total of maybe 20 minutes. Then I got waitlisted. Weird.

Wonder whether interviewing on the very first day backfired for you, in the sense that their expectations were very high, with nobody else to compare with as yet. But the least they could have done would have been to waitlist you for future consideration. But you do have other irons in the fire, so hopefully one of those will click. Good luck!

I'm really sorry to hear about this... UVM's had a LOT more instate apps this year than they thought they would (I know cause I do research in one of the medical school departments and hear the gossip every now and then) and they are very very committed to preserving spots for instaters. That being said, it sucks that they didn't just waitlist you, I can't imagine what they were thinking🙁 It's their loss. I wouldn't go assuming it was something you did in the interview, I've heard they place little emphasis on the interviews in comparison to GPA/MCAT straight numbers. Keep your chin up.

Are you sure there isnt something else holding back your application? Are you using the same LORs each year? Maybe someone had a very unflattering comment in one of them?

The first two grades should come out late Oct. By the time the advisor write and send the update letter to schools, it will probably be close to December.

I haven't been through this process before- so I don't have any magic advice to give you. You sound very dedicated and I would hope that would count for something with these schools.

Would it be worthwhile to contact the school and ask why you were rejected? Maybe you could get some tips for the next inteview?

And to top it off, my fantasy football team is 0-6.

Still, no matter what, it could be worse. I guess I could lose half my face or something. Anyway, thank your lucky stars.

Ok, I just have to say this, and before everyone starts flaming, you should know that I'm a fringe MD candidate at a US allopathic school, at best. But for Rayshan and the OP, I just can't understand the logic of applying four years in a row. Some schools state that they wont accept applications from people who have been rejected by them twice. And I'm sure that a lot of schools will simply ignore your app (but not that hefty secondary check) after the first couple of years. So it seems that, with each passing year, your (already low) chances become lower and lower. I'm sure there are stories out there of people who have reapplied and gotten in on the fourth or fifth try, but this is equally likely to happen as the random applicant getting into WashU, Harvard, Duke, Hopkins and UCSF in the same year.

Why not go to the Caribbean? I know the disadvantages, but can it be that bad? Unless you're absolutely set on doing Ortho, Derm or Heme-Onc, it doesnt make sense to have spent as many years applying as it takes to finish med school.

Intriguingly, I have a very similar set of circumstances as Rayshan and VanNos. I'm South Asian (there is an obvious limit to the number of South Asians most schools admit each year, and who can blame them? I wouldnt want to be surrounded by nothing but desis either). I'm probably not going to get in anywhere this year (and this is with an awesome SMP gpa). And though my interests are in competitive fields, if I don't get in this year, I would be hard pressed to try again. Only if I retoook the MCAT and got 37+, *and* received enough interviews and waitlists to make me think I'm pretty close, would I even consider it.

I'm really just curious as to why you wont consider a foreign med school. It cant be a cost thing, b/c a year at G'Town is as much as a year in the Caribbean. And since a lot of their grads match into things like Surgery and Emergency Med (I don't know if the surgery placements are categorical or not), you could still get a decent residency. So why go through with this every year?

I think if this is what he really wants then he should keep trying. I was just speaking with my physician this weekend and he was telling me that his son just got into med school after trying 6 times and the funny thing is that his son got into the best medical school in Canada. So I don't think there's anything wrong with someone who is persistent and determined to follow their dream.

I keep reapplying 'cause I don't know any better.

But seriously, the first time I applied, I applied in late October and to 5 schools and my MCAT was 27. Second year, retook the MCAT and went down to a 25, but since I took it in August, I had already submitted a few secondaries...so waited out the process but no dice. Retook MCAT for a third time cracked the 30 mark, applied, 2 interviews but no acceptances. I contacted a few schools, they told me if I did some post-bacc work, I'd have a mucho better chance. Hence brings us to round 4, where appplying alongside the SMP. After last year, I was seriously contemplating going overseas but I thought I'd give it another shot. Stranger things have happened.

Rumor has it that there is a glitch in AMCAS's database. If you apply 6 years in a row, you will automatically be accepted. Worth a shot? 😉

DrVanNostran, don't feel bad. There are definitely people who get rejected post interview. I just got a post interview rejection from UVA. But that was definitely my worst interview, since my luggage was lost on my flight there, so I was stressed out the night before, and I was really tired the whole interview day.
