Hi, everyone, I know the Letter of Intent question has been brought up many times on SDN, and the consensus is typically that a LOI should NOT be sent until a decision has been made. However, I interviewed with my dream school, Georgetown, in January and have not received a decision from them yet. Funnily enough, they are the only MD interview I received this cycle, so I would undoubtedly matriculate (and make it abundantly clear in my LOI) if given an acceptance. For a school that loves to see interest from applicants, and also one that has a relatively high waitlist rate post-interview, is this a case where sending a LOI post-interview, pre-decision is okay? This is also considering that April is tomorrow.

Did you send a thank you letter after the interview in January (unless the school explicitly said that they didn't want them)? I think that would have been your first opportunity to express your continued enthusiasm for the school.
Haven't they made offers by now to at least as many applicants as they have seats? The second best time to send a love letter would have been before that late winter wave of offers went out. At this point, it might be a bit late but the scuttlebutt around here for decades has been that they love that kind of thing (Mayo does too) so it certainly can't hurt.

Yes, I sent a thank you letter after the interview and also mentioned at that point that Georgetown was my top choice at the end of the letter. Regarding the amount of offers that have been given, I don’t have a great gauge at the moment, but at the time of interview, they provided an 8-10 week timetable for decisions, so I decided not to send a LOI before that time was up/before the late winter wave of offers. Now that it’s the 11-week mark, I’ll be sending the letter in the coming days then, since it’s better late than never. Thank you, I appreciate your insight!

Clarify for me. Georgetown hasn't asked you about whether you wanted to be on a waitlist? What do you remember from your interview day about connecting with the admissions team?

They have not offered any decision yet, so I have not been placed on a waitlist or received a rejection. From what I recall, the admissions team did not explicitly encourage letters of intent, but they did mention that we could send updates if we had any. The interview itself was with an alumni physician, and I really thought we had a great conversation and connected well. I emphasized my strong interest in the school in the thank you letter after connecting it to what we discussed in the interview. I have not sent any additional updates since I do not have major new experiences to report. I hope that answered your question, please let me know if I can clarify anything further.

You can check in to see about the status of your file and if a decision is imminent. I presume it should be soon.
