Rejection for 2005 list

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got my rejection letter from Loma Linda as well, I think they use the GPA scale as an excuse to throw out people who do not have any religious aspects in their application...their DAT averages are way below the scores I received although my GPAs are slightly lower...I doubt they received my DAT scores already as well, since I just took it 10 days ago...

Received a rejection letter from Iowa. At least they had the good graces to send it without having me fill out a secondary and pay a processing fee.

*gasp!* That's not possible! I'll never turn!

Actually, I am surprised that I haven't received one earlier. I am fine with it - my mother though was livid when I told her, "They rejected my son?!!"

My momasita , said the same thing!

This year is my second time around, last year I was rejected by 8 universities and waitlisted by 3. So far this year I have already been put on "hold" by Case Western and I haven't been offered a single interview. And its September 14th! Sweet, huh?

when did you apply?
getting waitlisted in three schools sounds like a big deal...

Does anybody know the percent of matriculation for second time applicants or those even put on a waitlist? I hope its high?

Where would one go to find that kind of info though?

Mmm someone once told me from some dental school ... sorry so vague, but's it's been a long day...that those who are reapplying and who have shown marked improvement in whatever area kept them from being out in the first place, were looked upon quite favorably 🙂 I would think so, it's an emotionally and financially draining process, this whole thing called the "dental application process." To do it twice deserves a round of applause. It'll all work out for the best 🙂 You and I are going to UT-Houston HD, didn't you hear? Hmm...or maybe I heard that in my dreams 🙄 3 more months and countin...

Thanks, I needed to hear that!

again , u have such a postive and glowing look upon things. ITs great

Hopefully you will get in this year! If not, try asking the adcoms which area that you can improve on so that you can increase the competitiveness of your application the next time around (that is in case you are robbed out again this year)

Good Luck!

WOW, I am surprise that you didn't get an interview with those scores! I guess either Case and increased its admission standards or they look at other (non-academic) areas as well.

Don't worry, you will get interviews from other schools! Good Luck!

Thanks for the words, I hope I can get an interview somewhere, haha...this has me worried. Gotta admit, wasnt expecting that one. Oh well, we'll see how the next couple months unfold.

FWIW, I called the Case Admissions office a few weeks back after getting my rejection letter (to see where I could improve my application). The person who I spoke to was very nice and completely upfront. My impression was that GPA was heavily weighted in their admissions criteria. He also mentioned that application numbers were up a GREAT deal this year and that admissions across the country would be "very competitive".

Man Reza, I would seriously thought that I was the only one in this club. I guess I can make room. I was seriously caught off guard as well. Your DAT was better than mine, but my gpa was better than yours. I still think we should have at least gotten an interview, maybe last round interviews. Damn this admission cycle!

Whats weird is that last year, when I applied with the same grades but worse DAT score (19AA, 17TS, 18PAT), I didnt get rejected until Feb/March. This year, it came rather quick.

Hey, at least Case isnt our first choice. In fact, for me, its not even top 10. The only thing that worries me now is that if Case is so quick to drop my app like that, then I fear most schools in my top 10 will do the same. Its all about the Texas schools for me.

HD, when did you schedule your UT-H interview for?

Got my rejection from Arizona today. The bright side is, I didn't feel like driving 10 hours both ways with a 1-year-old in the car. 😀

Man that is really ridiculous. You'd think they'd want NON residents because they pay out more! I hope University of Florida or Marquette dont feel that way 🙁

I had almost the exact same stats, (same DAT exactly, and 3.03 GPA 3.01sci) and Case gave me the same answer. I was alittle surprised also, maybe they upped their standards alot, I thought that the DAT score would help the not so great GPA but I guess not, I did get interviews elsewhere so dont worry.

Loma Linda - Did not send me a secondary, just rejected me.

GPA 2.92
Non-Sci 3.35
Sci 2.81

DAT 21 AA 22 TS 21 PAT

I am getting worried about this application cycle. Seems like a lot of people have high stats and dental schools are being very picky with the large pool of applicants. I think most schools are looking for high GPA's, which I lack. Sigh.

4. This year we will be accepting 50 students into the entering class of 2005. We anticipate that approximately 28-30 students will be selected from the applicant pool of legal residents of Colorado, 16-18 from students eligable to participate in their WICHE program, and 0-3 from students outside of Colorado and the WICHE program.

Something does not make sense to me: i called AZ 2 weeks ago to ask about chances of out o f state applicants. the lady said we are a private school and dont care which state you come from. Now i am seeing the above letter... i guess my rejection letter is on its way! cool

Private schools are funded by the students who go there, which is why they cost twice as much, and also why they don't care where you are from. Public state schools (like Colorado) are funded by the state, which is why the price is lower and why they want state residents. The state residents pay taxes, which pay for the schools. It's like keeping it all in the family for state schools. They get people from the state, who are more likely to stay in the state and generate more revenue, as well as pay taxes which, again, pay for the school. Private schools don't have a "family", so they don't care where you are from. Just cause a school has the name of a state in it (like Arizona) doesn't mean it's a state funded school.

Someone told me that UIC had like over 2000 some people apply for around 40 or 50 spots. Since I'm not from Illinois to begin with, I guess I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the big ol rejection on this one haha

naa, its just that the WICHE program wants to make it fair for the states that don't have dental schools i guess....

If this is the case, then why are ALL the states surrounding Utah members of the WICHE program but Utah is not included??? I know that it's supposed to help those that don't have instate access to a dental school but come on...why exclude Utah?

lol, i really don't know. I'm very uneducated about this whole thing, but I tried reading about it. The only thing I came up with is that there are states who don't have instate dental schools for the state residents; so they made the WICHE thing, which I even forgot what it stands for.

I'm sorry to hear its not really helping you out. I'm an Ohio resident, so I can't see what you are going through.

I wish you the best of luck... 🙂

Thanks, I have an interview at Ohio State on Saturday...It's one of my top choices...anyway. Good luck to you too!

For myself, I live in New Mexico. We do not have a dental school. Our state has agreed to allocate funding for dental students to attend other schools that have agreements with our state, they call this mother ship "Western Interstate Comission on Higher Education," aka WICHE. They make up the difference in tuition cost, so that a student such as myself will pay in state tuition. In return however, I have to return back to New Mexico and practice. You never get something for nothing.
I think it really stinks if Utah doesn't have similar agreements with other schools. It doesn't seem fair for Utah applicants. Also, if I'm not mistaken, this funding comes from the state. Your legislators are responsible for the, or ahem, lack of funding.

Arizona is a private school and Phospho's post, which you quoted, was about Colorado. You shouldn't worry about getting a rejection letter from Arizona on the grounds of your residency status.

Utah is a member of WICHE, although your state might not participate in the dental segment of the program. Idaho has a seperate arrangement with Creighton called IDEP (Idaho Dental Education Program) in which Creighton reserves eight seats for IDEP candidates and the state picks up a huge chunk of the tab. If you would like more information on WICHE and the in's and out's here is their website: http://www.wiche.edu/

In fact there is a program for Utah residents, however, it only applies to Creight SOD (and your first year is spend at the U. of Utah -- who wants to do that). Whereas the WICHE program encompases OHSU, UW, Colorado etc...(I don't know how many are part of the WICHE program). It's nice that we have an agreement with Creighton...but only 10 Utahn's get to partake of that agreement compared to the 500+ applicants from Utah every year.

You are correct in that Utah is a member of the WICHE program, however there are many facets to this program and Utah only has agreements with 3 types of professional schools, veterinary medicine, optometry, and podiatry. States other than Utah that are members of the WICHE programAK AZ HI MT NV NM ND WY. They have 10 schools that will be available to them: Loma Linda, Arizona, UW, UOP, OHSU, UCLA, USC, Colorado, UCSF, and UNLV. The Utah-Creighton Program is called RDEP but like I said it's only 10 applicants that receive it.

Okay SDNERs since I have been a post-***** the last few weeks I think I will post my schools and status

Arizona: Rejection -- (small thin envelope, not too much info. Assistant Ad stated DAT was a little low (18,18,17), GPA was low (3.2 Sci, 3.11 over), and not enough experience, volunteer/job (Mentor kids for 2 years, church, coach youth hockey, Work as an Assistant for a General and Perio). So the last one bothered me, what do they want me to do, open a food shelter on my own.

Boston: Interview invite
Case Western: Ink didn't dry on the check and I got a rejection (GPA low, and who ever stated that GPA was main criteria for getting in 1st round was right)

Indiana: Interview invite, went to interview, impressed by the school, people, city

Marquette: Still in review
Nova: Review
Southern Illinois: Waitlisted (What does this mean exactly? SIU doesn't require an interview, so am I waitlisted for acceptance?)

Tufts: Review
UIC: Review
Maryland: Rejected, didn't really think I had a shot
UNLV: Rejected, no letter yet, just infosource
UOP: Review

I came back from the Indiana interview with wind in my sails, then rejections from (Maryland, Case, AZ, UNLV) almost capsized my boat. Good luck with everyone

Case Western reject here. Wow..... looks like they are just sending them out left and right this year!

ASU grad: I can't see how you could have done better on the vounteer and work side. That baffles me too.

What I'd like to know is why they can notify you of anything negative before 12/1 but if you want that thick acceptance packet you better hold your breath and wait... I guess it is a courtesy that they reject you and you can get on with your life but they should also be able to accept you!

Actually, it is a courtesy to the other schools not to accept before December. If schools all accepted at different times they would all try to outcompete the other and it would cause mayhem. Try to look at things from different points of view other than your own, you're not the only one that has to make a decision in this application process.

others, tend to drag there feet. ITs torture I'll tell yah, torture.

Its torture waiting for rejections
ITs torture waiting for interviews
Its torture waiting for acceptances after interviews.

I see a trend here. 👍
