Rejection Letter after Waitlist Letter?

I was waitlisted at a certain school in late March. In late May, I received a rejection letter from them. Is this normal or common?

My impression of a waitlist was that I would either be accepted, anytime between now and late August, when classes start, or that I would be told in late August they had already filled their class. I did not expect an actual rejection letter, at least not 3 months before classes actually start.

Yes it is normal. MWU may have put more candidates than they needed on the waitlist and instead of giving you a false sense of hope for the summer, they just let you know now.
