So, back to the question originally asked, what are the implications of this rejection/un-rejection for an applicant? Those of us who were put back in the running obviously weren't what they were looking for originally, so won't they just reject us all pre-II anyways (since those have fewer spots)? Why bother un-rejecting us? Any insight that @Goro, @LizzyM, @gyngyn, and crew could offer is appreciated.

Re: Mayo?

Honestly, I wouldn't read into it to much and just treat it as you would any other interview. They don't waste resources giving interviews to people who aren't under some sort of consideration, and how much consideration you're under likely varies by school, so there's really no way for you to know. The only thing you do know is that the better you do at your interview, the better your chances. Worrying about how much something outside of your control will affect your chances is not going to help you right now.

I suspect the new Dean either has a different vision than his/her predecessor, OR s/he looked at the applicants and thought "We're rejecting too many qualified people! We'll never fill the Class at this rate!"

Happened to me this cycle.
