I am pretty fired up right now. 😡 Sorry...

I just had some friends (in med school, obviously) tell me that no one gets rejected from Pod school admissions. I know there are still stereotypes and people looking down on this profession. 🙁 I told them that there wouldn't be a point in having an admissions committee then, if anyone can get accepted and the more important issue is people staying in the school after they are accepted, because it is a medical school curriculum... I don't know. Any thoughts or opinions?

Don't have to share your Rejection stories, I know it's personal. But maybe you've known other people who actually DO get rejected, so that I can relay the message and/or stats to my buddies.

I was waitlisted from 1 school. I think that probably counts. My stats are in my older posts I believe.

I remember one of my friends told me two of his friends got rejected from NYCPM and Temple very early in the admissions process. One had a 3.4 and a 16 DAT (sucky) and the other had 3.2 and 20 MCAT.

Who says nobody gets rejected?

I know of people rejected from Azpod, Scholl, and DMU. Never heard of anyone rejected from OCPM/Barry.

yeah ditto. Never heard of anyone getting rejected from ocpm (nothing against them, just a big class size). If the overall average mcat score is around 25 yet the average mcat score for podiatry school acceptance is around 21 that should tell you it's not hard to gain acceptance. If you apply broadly enough pretty much anyone can get in somewhere. I'm sure there have been students rejected from every school they applied to if they had completely dismal stats but truthfully almost everyone gets in. Pod school admission standards are low (low enough that Seinfeld would reference the issue on an episode saying even George could get in). Hopefully that will change in the future, but right now it is a tough arguement for the op to win. Like people have said before, pod school is easy to get into but hard to finish.

Rejections? I'm sure I'll be getting some, unfortunately. I just re-calculated my separate GPAs using the AACPM Grading System...the science is not pretty (2.9). That will bring at least a few rejections right off the bat.

Okay so heres how i see it: i really dont have anything to prove that they are wrong. But this is how I see people putting down this education/profession.

I would never even think to put down someone elses career goals or profession. If they are doing what they love, then thats all that counts anyway. We as podiatrists are going to face the types of people that try to put us down for the rest of our lives...just because we have a DPM instead of an MD after our name. But based on the pre-med kids at my school (who also have been guilty of putting the profession down, saying its not a "real" doctor) the ones that are insulting towards this profession are the ones that arent happy with their own career path. More specifically (in my own experiences with kids at my school) its the kids whos parents ar FORCING them to go to medical school.

So for the people who say "oh, everyone gets in" or "oh, you wont be a REAL doctor." i pity them. seriously, because if they have enough energy to put someone else's career goals down then they obviously have a conflict within themselves.

So, I guess what I am trying to say is we need to stick together and not let comments like these get to us. Because at the end of the day, we will still be doctors, we will be doing what we love, and we will be damn good at it. 🙂

Very well put, thank you. 👍 Let's hang in there! 🙂

Here's the thing, if you REALLY want zero putdowns go into business, invent a new gizmo & become the next Gates, Jobs or someone like that. Or better yet, invest like Warren Buffet & reap huge rewards. Or open a new chain to outsell Walmart like Sam Walton did many yrs ago. Business will trump healthcare in earning power height but not in consistency. Health is needed daily forever. Business is here today & gone tom.

i know of someone personally whom got rejected from OCPM so above statment is incorrect

If you enjoy what you do on a daily basis who really cares if it was easy to get into. I'd much rather wake up happy to go to work than be proud of myself for getting accepted into a tough program however many years ago.

I'm sure every school rejects people. You could have a 3.5 and 30 MCAT but a complete idiot during the interview.

If you get rejected by ocpm or barry, then somethings wrong.

On the other hand, I know some people with low scores got accepted to sam. merrit and new york.

I would think that you would, at this stage of your life, be able to recognize people who support you and your decisions and those who are just a-holes and want to bring you down.

These are not your friends, they are little immature btches who really don't respect you or give a crap what happens to you. In fact, they probably get a thrill out of putting you down.

But when they finally grow up and realise that medicine isn't the fairy tale that they had in their immature little heads it will be too late for them to switch fields and they will be stuck doing a routine job pretending to be successful making 120k/yr.

Now, as far as what they said, well, there may be some truth to it.

but I encourage you to not be so insecure because they are the ones who are insecure since they need something as silly as a middle class lifestyle and a way overused title of Dr. to reaffirm their superficial identity.

Well said

Now now whats wrong with being a little insecure. I'd rather be insecure and know my flaws than an ego ravaging idiot who doesnt.

Try to be taken seriously by your pateints when you are "a little insecure."

They can smell self-doubt and will flee.

Physicians must be confident in front of their patients.

End of discussion.

Insecurity comes in all forms. Whether it is something you can see in a person or just plain something they dont like and keep to themselves. I know a few. For example, how about a dentist who has a mole on her finger. She is insecure about that but wraps it up with tape. And she still shows as much confidence as the next dentist.

Or me. I'm short for a guy, around 5'7 and it is something that sometimes I am insecure about. But I highly doubt that it will effect how I operate as a doctor in the future.

Discussion not over.

According to AACPM in 2007 844 people applied to podiatric medical schools, and 586 people received admission. Aproximately 30% of applicants were rejected. I know this does not compare to MD schools, but people do get rejected.

Right but from my personal experience and talking to people, never met anyone rejected from Ohio. Admissions even says theres a 85-90% acceptance rate (so some people do in fact get rejected, its just very few). Barry seems to be quite similar in this regard.

Med schools and podiatry schools look for the same criteria in their applicants, but the standards for each school are different in more ways than just the mcat and GPA.

For example, I know a guy who got an amazing MCAT score and had a 3.8 GPA. However, he was never involved in any research, clinical experience, extra curricular activities and he was kinda socially inept. Despite this, he got accepted to medical school. A few months after entering medical school, he was asked to leave by the school because of his poor attitude and social behavior. After getting kicked out, he applied to podiatry schools. Based on his GPA and mcat he got interviews to all the schools. HOWEVER, EVERY podiatry school questioned him in the interview about why he lacked clinical experience, research, and involvement in things other than his classes. He was only accepted to one podiatry school.

While I understand that this particular guy had his unique social problems, his experience goes to show that podiatry schools look for more than just a good student...they want a person who will have a great bedside manner with patients, and influence the world of podiatric medicince positively.

This idea was also reinforced in my own experience. I had decent GPA and mcat, but nothing stupendous. However I got scholarships from several of the podiatry schools specifically for all the "unique experiences and activities that I have been actively involved with"

I find it interesting that people are listing NYCPM as a harder school to get into now. I thought a few years back it was OCPM that people were getting denied at. Somebody rank the schools. I am not sure, but I thought I remember comparing GPAs of schools and NYCPM was below 3.0 in average GPA by Princeton Review.com. That doesn't change that it's a top notch institution, but I could picture without looking at numbers that California would demand higher stats then that.

Who's been saying its harder to get into NY these days? They have a big class size and still accept the DAT, it doesn't get much easier than that for pod school admissions.
