Haha I mentioned my school (over 3/4 of the students are engineering majors) to the Dean of Academic Affairs at my school and she goes, "You don't know how long I've wanted to set up a social between the CVM and your undergrad. We have all the girls, they have all the guys. It'd be perfect!" My husband and I are both engineers and met in undergrad. I know several classmates who are dating or have dated engineers.

I don't know where I stand in all of this.. but last fall, my boyfriend was less than supportive of my application to vet school though he knew I was applying when we first met. Sure, he gave his best supportive voice, but the emotion wasn't there. He made it a point to tell me that he loved the town we live in and that he wasn't leaving.. that this was his home. So, I eventually became so depressed and torn between my dream and my love, that I wimped out and pulled my application. Only after that did he start to show his true, selfish, colors.

I'm so glad I'm single now. 🙂

I did that 2 years ago. Didn't apply to any schools not in the south because the bf at the time wouldn't leave. He was a selfish one, too.

I don't know if it'd be totally fair to consider that selfish...I mean, you are asking someone else to give up basically everything to move. To them, it just wasn't worth it. I wouldn't necessarily consider that selfish, more a pros/cons list that balanced a different way than someone had hoped. 😳 Better you find out before than you would if you had taken them to vet school and they resented you heavily for it.

I don't know, I'm well-aware I have a weird perspective on stuff like that. So while I understand it sucks, as graduate students you guys are taking a different pathway than the majority of the people on this Earth. For some people, it just won't be worth it for them to give up what they want, even if it means ending the relationship. It's better to find out sooner than later.

SOV, those gifs make me :laugh::scared::laugh:. I'm applying to PhD programs myself, haha (in human development).

Oh, I didn't think his lack of interest in moving from his "home" was selfish. I can certainly understand and appreciate his desire to stay here with his steady job and new home. But... It was a lot of other things that he did that were selfish. I don't even wanna go there. 😡

I totally feel you on this. My boyfriend of 3 years broke up with me this past May, but even if he hadn't I would have ended up in the same boat. There was no way he was going to come with me to vet school, he didn't care that I was doing it (and I mean he really didn't care) but he had no interest in doing it with me. I wasn't real happy that he decided to break up with me the day before my orgo 2 final and two days before the rest of them, but I was happy it happened then and not when I was leaving for vet school.
Plus he was a bum anyways who has no idea what he's doing with his life. Which is ok, but there's a difference between not knowing and trying to figure it out and just having no motivation or ambition...

Oh, mine was selfish. And jealous of school. It wasn't a thing like "if you go oos i just can't follow you there" but more like "how dare you even apply to a school that far away when my whole life is here and therefore yours should be too." I could have respected him if he had a mature conversation about his geographical limitations... But to demand that I consider his desire to stay close to home much more important than attending veterinary school and living my dream was selfish and disrespectful. That is one of the many reasons we broke up...

I just broke up with the short term boyfriend a few weeks ago. We'd been dating two months. I feel like it was a learning experience relationship. He was super controlling. Fun story, one of the things leading up to me dumping him was while we were fighting he sent me a message that was just a list of reasons he could never marry me. Mind you we'd been dating 2 months... Also when I broke up with him he changed his profile picture to a black square. He also constantly makes facebook statuses that are clearly passive aggressive attacks on my character. It's quite humorous. A few days ago he sent me a text saying "I can't believe you're already dating other guys," because I went to the fair with a guy AND a girl. He liked the photo of the guy and I on the ferris wheel together..... I think I dated a 13 year old girl, but I'm not sure....
 
I'm sorry you had to deal with that, but it still makes me laugh.
 
I mean two weeks out and it's really funny. I can't imagine how funny it will be in 3-4 years... I mean seriously... Facebook profile picture... black square...

Idk... He says he loves me and still wants to be with me. I'm like if that was the case maybe you shouldn't have called me a slut multiple times. He also didn't like when I wore make up to work, because who was I trying to impress, isn't enough to know he thinks I'm beautiful? It's like I'm from Texas, I put make up on to go to bed. He thought it was inappropriate that I didn't put a bra on when my roommates boyfriend was over. Mind you it was like 11 AM on a Sunday and I was hungover and in my pajamas. I will wear whatever I want in my own house. Two or three of the reasons he could never marry me boiled down to "you're really pretty and other guys look at you"

I've never heard somebody say that they were glad they picked the guy over their dreams. If the guy was worth it and really a good match for you, you would both figure out how to make it work. You can look at it that he is choosing to NOT move over keeping you.
 
"I love you, slut" is a term of endearment, right? I used to work with a girl who called me slut-muffin (IDK why). Maybe if he sail "I love you, slut-muffin"?

Oh so. One of my guy friends and I have gotten into a long discussion about how awesome Taylor Swift is on one of my facebook statuses. Guy friend said, "Right! It's like she already knows we were meant to be together," in reference to Taylor Swift and himself. Ex liked it almost immediately. My friend texted me and was like wtf, should i be scared?

Ok.... last b**ching remark about him, because this happened last night. He JUST uploaded pictures of himself laying in my bed with my puppy to facebook. Pictures that were taken in July or August. He usually uploads pictures weekly to facebook, so he saved these for awhile and then a few weeks after we breaks up posts them. They were taken one day while I was at work. The caption? "Best Cuddle Buddy Ever." I know he's just trying to get a rise out of me and I'm furious, so it's working. Just gonna ignore it though.

so this is sort of a different direction for the thread......but has anyone been in a relationship with or know of any relationships between fellow vet students? (either within same class, or between classes) how did they work out?

just something i've been wondering about.

(obviously, i've been stuck inside for too long during the hurricane and have nothing else better to think about with my time 🙄 )

My first boss was in his second year out of school and was dating a third year student. I think they'd started dating when she was in her first year and he was in his fourth. They lived together and even so it wasn't easy. Then again, that guy's a pain in the ass, so we can blame it all on him. :laugh:

I know two sets of vets who were in the same class--one set c/o 2012 and the other c/o 1992!--and got married by the time they graduated. They're happy and have been throughout their relationships.

I get the sense breaking up with a classmate is difficult, but if it works, you have a built in study buddy and partner who really understands how difficult it is.

There are a few in my class between vet students of different years. We're all first years, though, so it's too soon to tell what will happen..... :xf:

Well, I happen to be that person in our class so far(at least that I'm aware of)...totally wasn't planning on that one. I actually was pretty adamant about not getting involved with any one in our class and clearly failed at that one. Obviously things are still new, but so far it's been fine. I'm learning more that I need to study a bit differently, so I'm kind of separating myself a bit more around tests, but he understands and is there to explain things if I need help and vice versa. Although, I also just haven't figured out how to study for these tests period. And I definitely worry about what will happen if we break up since we have so many mutual friends (although, I feel like that's vet school in general) but I'll deal with that if it ever comes to that point.

There are quite a few relationships in the class above us that seem to be doing well still too.
 
There are several relationships - a few in the class and some that span different years. It can work, but try to ensure that if things end, they end nicely? I know, good luck planning for that, right? No big blow-ups here as of yet.

Same goes for friendships. It's hellza awkward for the rest of the class when two friends have a visibly thorny breakup.
 
Penn 2014 is couple central. I don't think I'd want to spend that much time with anyone!

The worst are the ones that sit next to each other every day and partner up for all labs. And then go home to see each other at the end of the day. I think I would turn homicidal very quickly :laugh:
