There are many people at my school who seem to take the public health/health policy route while remaining pre-med. Some of them do research on healthcare policy, rural & primary care, etc. How relevant would such research be to demonstrating interest in medicine? For example, how public health research compare to biochemistry research? Are both useless for demonstrating actual interest in medicine? Is it better to focus on things like finding opportutnities for patient interaction in a clinical setting, non-medical volunteering for poor and underserved populations, etc.?

You don't necessarily do it to show interest in medicine, you do it because the research topic interest you and/or because you're interested in the way the scientific method is applied, and/or because you think you might want to do research in the future.

I think it's easier to have a creative research role (coming up with a project) through the public health research route than it is to say, propose a novel biochemistry research project.
