Hi everyone

I failed a course by a single question (0.2%) and as a result I have to take a Remediation Exam. The exam is on our Fundamentals Course which is all of the basics sciences.
It is 2 days away and I am starting to panic. It is on all of Immuno, all of BioChem, all Anatomy, all Micro, Anti-biotics, Anti-cancers, Anti-fungals, Fundamentals of Pathology, Infectious Disease and pretty much anything you can think of. I have been studying for a month but I feel like I just cant memorize any thing more. Drugs, Micro, Enzyme names are all starting to run together and paralyze me. Any advice would be so much appreciated.

Thank you 🙂

Sound slike it's time to stop studying and take a breather for your mental health's sake.

At my school, remediation is to show competence, not mastery.
Thus you don't have to ace the damn thing, just pass it.

Hopefully yours is set up like tis.

Get some exercise tomorrow, and a good night's sleep and let us know how things turn out.

Good luck!

The exam is Wednesday evening.
The problem is that the exam is on everything regarding basic sciences. It is near impossible to just memorize the amount of content on the test.
A 70% is passing for the exam but that is rather high for an NBME exam especially given it is on one content we had a short time to review.
I’m just sort of panicking as I feel there is no way to retain it all and I know the person making the test is famous for being very nit picky with his question selection.

1) You know more than you think you know.
2) Breathe. Remember to breathe.

Have you been using sketchy micro and pharm? I would do a run through of that and watch some of the relevant boards and beyond videos.

I think this is bad advice for a remediation exam. Some people study for boards the entire 2 years and usually, their grades take a hit (though they pass) but they're prepared for boards. That's because class exams are different than boards. The OP already failed this particular exam. To now study board material instead of the specific lectures his professors gave would be very risky.

OP, did you attend class or did you watch the videos at home? Did you take notes? Professors usually try to slip in hints here and there about things that are important, like "this is going to be relevant in every organ system" or "this is the only drug that does such and such" or "this drug interacts with 10,000 other meds..."

Go over your notes. Group things together as much as possible. Just pass. Also, don't get down on yourself for having to remediate.

Foundations is very difficult because there's no context. It gets easier as you go through because you won't be learning random chemo drugs, but rather the cancer it treats, the physiology of why it works, and why the side effects it has happen. Get through this hump and things will make more sense.

Hi Mass Effect
The original was based on professor written questions but the remediation is NBME questions. I found that Board resources helped me a lot in the 3 body systems blocks since, but part of the issue is just retention.
Ie) memorizing bugs, memorizing drugs, memorizing pathways anatomy etc.
Its too much of everything. Ive relied on Pathoma,First Aid my lecture notes and a little boards and beyond. Ive passed through all the material but I feel like there are still some gaps in retaining it all, especially the drugs.
Any advice?

have you given sketchy pharm a try? If it's not sticking might be worth it!

Sketchy Pharm helped me with drug classes i struggled more with (the autonomics in particular)

It was hard. I’m cautiously optimistic that I passed. I only needed 70%
The other students remediating also found it difficult

I take mine tomorrow, any advice?

Edit: I'm doing the physiology NBME

I failed

I go before the advancement committee Wednesday.
I’m asking for a chance to do another exam in August or the alternative is repeat MS1

Sorry to hear that OP just remember this isnt the end and remediation doesnt mean you wont be a doctor

Thanks
Most likely repeating the year. Asking for a new remediation attempt is sort of my Hail Mary

Take things in stride, reach out to the learning center and see what went wrong last year, go to therapy if needs be. People will be way more supportive that you expect and it will pass. Your main goal is to get that MD/DO

Thanks. I already lined up 2 tutors and a meeting with the learning coach in hopes that they allow me to have another attempt at Remediating.

My Dean has basically said chances are slim but its possible with a highly convincing argument. Any advice on how to argue that would be appreciated.

Sorry I cant help with that, just take ownership and talk about what negatives that came come from remediating. THe school wants to make sure you know the material well and not fail Step 1 thats basically what they are worried about . They will prob turn to the micro, immuno and pharm and say these are things that are testable alot on the exam , so you need to figure out how you will answer that. ****** Also please note!! Please please please read your schools handbook to see what a second failed remediation means for you. If that means you are opened to being dismissed I suggest you beg them to make you repeat instead of taking the remediation.

We don’t have an official policy per say
The options are at that point dismissal or repeating the year but a year behind (M1 strangely starts before M2) but I would have missed my chance so I’d do M1 in should be M3.

No good options but feel better about the new test

I also got a 4th year who is gonna tutor me to personally advocate on my behalf

I'm sorry you're in this situation. Sending you all the positive vibes for a second remediation!

Thanks

My Dean said my odds of that are very low but an extremely well written plan to succeed may swing the committee.
I’ve got 2 tutors onboard once for weekly sessions and once for daily sessions and weekly meetings with our learning specialist.

Any advice for something I can add to bolster the plan is appreciated.

If you have any mental health issues get that sorted out (might be kina scary putting that on paper, double-check that it stays confidential or find a way to convey it without that being documented if that is a problem and you do need mental health. Dress semi casually, look at all the members in their eyes while you speak and take ownership of the issue.

thanks
I will probably give me school counseling center a call today and see what is available next week.

I'm really sorry you're in this situation. It sounds like you basically studied for half of Step 1 over the summer.

You're not the first to repeat a year of medical school. Just try and relax.

Yeah it was essentially half of the content on step 1.
I’m hoping they let me have another chance.
I reached out to student counseling who didn’t have any openings.
