Hi,

I am a concerned girlfriend writing on behalf of my boyfriend. We are long distance, and he just called me with news that he cannot come see me next week because he has to remediate due to not passing a course by a few points. He had purchased nearly $1,000 worth of flight tickets for during his remediation week (both to see me, but then to go home to visit family/appointments) has some crucial medical appointments on the books for his doctors at home, and was registered for a Pediatric conference that happens to be in his hometown (he’s planning to specialize in pediatrics).

This remediating news really throws a wrench into all of that. He is going to speak with his administration/course coordinator - is there any hope or flexibility?

This is a really school specific question, but unfortunately I wouldn’t count on flexibility. I know the remediation courses at my school ran on a very tight schedule.

He should talk to his Deans

That peds conference he might as well cancel. The doctors appointments and flight tickets might get him some mercy but I wouldn't count on it. I hope he booked directly thru the airline so he can get refunds, if not he has to call the broker (priceline etc) explain his situation and see if they are willing to refund (they will call the airlines and ask them as well).
I unexpectedly moved over the holiday break one year, and my parents were able to get some hotel refunds doing this despite the no refund policy (calling priceline etc), so I suggest it. Sometimes they are nice.

More importantly tho, I suggest your boyfriend figure out what he needs to do to successfully remediate tho. The money sucks, but getting an F on your transcript sucks alot more.
