This is clinical volunteering because you are interacting with patients. And you are right - shadowing is its own category.

I'm trying to volunteer at my local Veterans Affairs Hospital.

I was originally going to be a companion to Veterans (talk to them, comfort them - basically be their friend, and a source of empathy). But someone told me that's not clinical volunteering?

What is specifically clinical volunteering?

They had something about meeting shadowing doctors - but I don't think shadowing is clinical volunteering, and I've already shadowed doctors...I don't want to do that here - I was thinking a volunteer position with patient contact?

What do you guys think?
Are the veterans outpatients coming for routine well care, or residents of an assisted living community? Or are they clinic patients, skilled-level nursing home patients, or inpatients of the hospital? If the latter two, it's an activity that would be considered Volunteer-Medical/Clinical. If it's not one of the above, maybe you could define your role better for us.
