Virginia Tech prefer applicants from the Appalachian region.

The schools that care the most about research are most of the T20. They are very competitive and also require the high stats to go along with it.
I agree. Just look at those schools with the highest median MCAT and GPA, and you'll get an idea of what are the most research loving schools.

Some top tier schools prefer stats (WUSTL, Hopkins, Columbia)

Others are more lenient and prefer experiences (Harvard, Stanford, Duke). These would be the schools to target if your stats are adequate (517, 3.7+) but you have very good research

UPenn and NYU also love high stats.

UCSF loves “X-factor” applicants, especially in community service and patient advocacy for underserved minority populations. It loves the “Mother Teresa” applicants.

Stanford is very niche and likes “silicon-valley” types who are entrepreneurial and innovative. As an engineer, this is my dream school.

Non trad here. Are there any research schools that are not high stat? Dont really care for prestige

Not really. Ranking is pretty much directly tied to NIH/research funding.

And high ranked schools can be selective

Virginia tech as mentioned above

Furthermore, if one wants a career in research/academic medicine, it behooves them to attend a top school. Thus those interested in research usually want to go to a top ranked school. It becomes a positive feedback type thing
