If a student recieves a substandard grade at one school, but takes the exact same class at another, will the higher grade replace the lower one? or must you take the class at the college that gave the lower grade? or does it depend upon the medical school?

thanks in advance.

whenever you ready to apply to medical school (jr. year, at least 135 quarter hrs)...then amcas or non-amcas school will average all your classes out ... science and nonscience.

I'm almost sure, but please check with your premed adv. at your school.

😀

I agree. I'm almost sure they average them.

but if you take the class at the same college will they replace them grade ?

Osteopathics will replace the garde, but Allopathics will average the two. Unfortunately I have to deal with this too.🙁

so wait.... if you get an F in any class and you retake it .. they average the grade?!?!??!!? jesus.. what kind of **** is that...

What did u think they did?

How do quarter hrs compare to units?

does anyone know the answer to my question?

if you retake the class at the SAME college does it get replaced? what if you retake it at a different college.

Unless your school somehow removes the first grade from your transcript, it will still be factored into your AMCAS gpa. Same thing if you take it at another school because you will have to send in both transcripts. Just try your best if you decide to retake. If you improve, med schools will see that. Good luck!

Most classes on the quarter system are 4 units, and 4 quarter units = 2.7 semester units.

....... im confused. what are you talking about when you translate into sem units?

is the AMCAS app done it semester units?

im interested in this answer. I think not sure at all that even if you get academic forgiveness which I did for my F, it wont matter it still counts. Tough luck I guess for me, I did what I had to do retook it and made an A maybe adcoms will let it slide but probably not 😀. Having a good excuse is essential I guess.

The AMCAS application wants to know about every grade you ever received. Therefore, unless the school removes your bad grade from your transcript like redstar18 said, the AMCAS application will average the two. This means that your AMCAS GPAs will be lower than your school GPA. This is common.

I'll give you a for instance. I just got my post bacc degree at Boise State University. They have a cool policy called "5 year grade replacement" wherein if you do below a C in any course, you can replace the grade by retaking the class within 5 years. The problem however is AMCAS (isn't it always?). They still require you to report both grades even if your school doesn't factor the lower grade into your GPA. AMCAS is a bastard this way. But hey...at least it evens the playing field.

Why are quarter units worth less I've always wondered? 🙁

I mean, we have to take the same crap in much less time which makes the reading for the more difficult class very mucho difficult. <sigh>

I think the quarter system is much better. Most of the time u don't really move faster in it, for most classes it takes the same amount of time. For example at berkeley we have the semster system and we have physics 8a and 8b taken over a whole school year. At schools with the quarter system student would take physics 8a, 8b, and 8c. Its still the same amount of time.

I sure they would especially if u have a reason why u got the F like u said u did. Even if ur only reason is that u were just slacking off or unmotivated (as I was for my first 2 yrs) I think they still won't look to critically at it as long as u have an upward trend.

Sorry, I was just answering NRAI2001's question of how quarter units relate to semester units. If your school is on the quarter system, the AMCAS app will automatically convert your quarter hours into semester hours. You don't have to convert anything yourself; just enter in the # of units the class is worth according to your school. Hope that clarifies things.

I like the quarter system too! What I wonder about my school is that chem, physics, ochem, etc are all 3 quarters (= 2 semesters) but gen bio is only 2 quarters...what's up w/ that?

Does that include plant bio? Wow I really hated plant bio, it was so boring 😱 😱 😱 😱

.......... so basically im screwed. lol..

looks like i have to do a postbacc....

Not necessarily...

If you get better grades on your retakes, adcoms WILL see that despite them being averaged out in your gpa. I believe they use grades mostly to screen for secondaries/interviews, not to determine acceptance/rejection.

You may have already read this somewhere, but grades are just one factor in the whole application process. (There's also your MCAT, activities, etc. etc.) Maybe speak with your counselor or an admissions officer if you want to better gauge your chances.

Good luck with your decisions, and stay positive!

thanks for the advice redstar, i appreciate it. i think i'll do that.

how does W (Withdrawal) incorporate into AMCAS gpa?
