Hi.

I received A's in all my classes I had for my 2 quarters this year minus Calculus [undergrad level]. 1st Quarter, C+, 2nd Quarter I sadly received a F as simple as it is despite my effort and the way the way the tests turned out, and I am not sure if I want to retake it.

This is partly due to fear of failing again...considering I will have much harder courses this upcoming quarter. And I am not sure if it even matters too much in terms of pre-med considering I am not a math major..although I can definitely see it mattering to an extent.

I feel like moving on by not retaking this part 2 Calc course and moving on to the 3rd part of the Calculus series upcoming quarter and being done with it next year. I am 85% leaning towards just moving on because quite frankly I do not want to think about taking the final part of the Calculus series next year.

I think I have more or so decided on this already as I do not even want to go through the hassle of having to re-register or through all that material again which is just disappointing. I just figured I'd get some reflections from everyone else here.

Thank you

Are you sure you can continue with another part of the course after failing a previous part? I would doubt it. Also, these classes usually have concepts that build on each other, so if you failed to grasp the concepts so severely that you got an F, you would be playing catch up as well as trying to learn the new material. Just retake the class.

I would be VERY, VERY wary and cautious about moving on to the "3rd part" of Calc when you performed poorly in the first 2 parts - it probably won't get any easier (I'm not familiar with quarter system calculus, so this is a generalization). You need at least a basic understanding of the preceding classes before you move on - which by your admission you don't have. You need to turn this trend around - fast- and continuing digging yourself a deep hole will make it extremely difficult to be successful later. Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone. I decided to retake it since I really agreed to all these points, especially the fact that the classes build on each other. I guess I will have to prove to myself first that I can actually better understand concepts before moving on to the next section for calc. I know that calc isn't groundbreaking in terms of the curriculum, but it is important to change this weird trend I have with it that comes off bad.

Thank you all for your input.

I understand how you feel about failing- it's a 'once bitten, twice shy' type of thing. I didn't do so well my first quarter in college and failed the first part of calculus (I overestimated the math I could handle and took engineering calculus, which I don't even need). I realized that I've always been a little scared of math, so I took a breather my second quarter and got straight A's in my classes except chemistry. Ah, see this trend with chem and math? This quarter I'm retaking calculus by taking a biosci version of it, which people say is much easier, and hoping to get an A.

Hang in there, these are all obstacles that we have to hurdle across.. or crawl slowly across. Best of luck this quarter!
