Hi guys,

I am currently a sophomore undergrad. I have taken general biology I & II, general chemistry I & II, physics I & II, several other biology classes, and am currently taking organic chemistry I.

My school does not offer organic chemistry II in the summer. I have to wait until the fall to take it. This upsets me a bit because I want to take my MCATs mid to end of January 2012. If I take organic chemistry II in the fall, I would be done with my prereqs in December and would have winter break to dedicate to studying. I can begin studying all the other portions of the MCAT during the fall semester but I also wanted to take biochemistry prior to taking my MCATs because I have heard it helps.

So here is my dilemma..
Should I stick it out and wait until the fall to take organic chemistry II and attempt to take biochemistry at the same time? Meanwhile, I'll start studying for the other sections of the MCAT during the fall semester.

OR

Another university nearby offers organic chemistry I and organic chemistry II in the summer sessions. I doubt my school will allow me to take organic chemistry I at home and then organic chemistry II elsewhere. They usually require us to begin/end a sequence at the same university. Should I consider just re-taking organic chemistry I at said university so I can take organic chemistry II in the second summer semester? This would allow me to take biochemistry in the fall and finish up my prereqs earlier.

What would you do? Would it look bad to be re-taking organic chemistry I at another university?

guess this is just an opinion question if your univ won't transfer the orgoII from the other univ. but i can't imagine taking orgoII twice. even though fall might be rougher with orgoII and biochem and studying, i would do that. if you want more time after completing those to study hardcore just bump your test date back to feb, it's not that much farther away. plus the orgo will be fresher and you won't have to waste time studying it.

FYI, there is not too much ochem 2 on the MCAT. Just a few reactions you need to memorize.

If I were you I would not re-take ochem 1.

I'm doing something similr to what you're doing. But first did you double check that your school wouldn't accept any outside credit? Also why can't you take biochem in the summer if you feel taking biochem, orgo 2, and studying for the MCAT would be hard in the fall?

Organic Chemistry II is listed as a pre/co requisite in our course catalog.

Try to get special permission at your school by explaining your situation. I am not sure, and I highly doubt Organic II is required in Biochem, but its worth a shot.

At my school the prereq for biochem is at-least a B or higher in Organic I and II, I know people that have taken it in the summer with special permission even though they got a C in Organic I.

As stated before, the best option still seems to be moving your test date .

Is your academic advisor a Chemistry faculty? If not, then I would go up to Department Chair for Chemistry and explain your situation. I advise, however, to not make it sound like you are getting an easy way, but rather, you want to take Biochemistry because it seems like interesting course and that you don't want to fall behind in coursework because of Organic Chemistry II.

...unless of course, your advisor is the Department Chair for Chemistry.
