Hey guys,

I was wondering if it was possible to repeat a pgy1 year. I am currently a ca-1 and am considering switching to a combined internal medicine program/preventive med program. I have contacted the program I am interested in the PD said that I would not be eligible because I would needed to have completed by pgy1 year at the that program. I said I willing to repeat my pgy1 year at the program. He does not know if that is possible?

After doing some research, I have seen that people have completed pgy 1 years. How does this work? I know one of the issues is medicare funding? What other issues are there?

Where can I find the"official" acgme rules on this. I looked on the acgme website and could not find anythign

Of course its possible. People repeat internships all the time when they change specialities or go back and do a different one.

Yes, there are funding issues but there are no rules barring you from repeating internship in a different specialty that I am aware of.

Presumably you did a Prelim IM year before anesthesia; you'd want to see if any of those rotations would count toward the combined program.

That's correct. You can certainly repeat an internship/PGY-1 year. Some programs don't understand this though. There is no rule per se that you have to do a PGY-1 year at a program, and it's not infrequent that programs that don't fill in the match and have interested applicants who have previously completed a pgy1 year at a different place are considered.

While that particular program may not consider you that does not mean others won't.

Just curious but why are you switching out of anesthesia?

I also wonder why this person wants to switch...
I also think the PD of the program was unhelpful...may want to consider another program, unless you definitely really want that one.
The program would probably have to find some $ to pay for you , or part of your salary, if they want you to repeat the entire PGY1 year.
They could, if they chose, give you credit for at least some of the rotations you have already done...
