Hi everyone,

So it looks like a strong possibility I may be repeating senior year. It is unfortunate considering I had a decent number of OMFS interviews with a strong chance of matching. Regardless, these are the cards I have been dealt and need to keep my chin up and move on to reinvent myself. I was just wondering if down the line there would be any chance of doing OMFS. I plan on doing at least 2 intern years to really show my grit and gain good experience. I'm repeating not due to any academic struggles but mainly based on misunderstandings and having to take time off for personal family issues. Any input would be appreciated, thank you.

So you are withdrawing from match?

Might be a good idea to have a very honest conversation with the PDs at the programs you favored....so they don't think you just didn't rank them...and to let them know you intend on reapplying in the next cycle

And if you really are doing a full 12 months not much to do...but if it's only 6-8 months, then you might be able to find an intern spot in early 2015

Since youre still a student you can fill your breaks with more externships...start reading omfs textbooks

In any event, I would reapply next year...only settle for an internship if you must

Good luck.

Wow, thanks for sharing. I actually had to do an extra year (senior) while in dental school. It's common. It happened to a few of my classmates as well. That's life. Whether academic or personal, all that matters is that you keep going and don't stop until you finish. It's a good idea to inform the residency directors. You'd be surprised at how understanding they are and I know of cases where it did not deter possible candidates from getting in the following year. Your "repeat" year will not be as busy so you will definitely find some other things to do. That year will go by quickly so be sure to take advantage of things you can do to better yourself before you go into the residency. I've had places of employment to ask me years ago about the extra year, but explained that I had financial as well as personal family health issues to deal with. All in all, it didn't matter. Sometimes people ask just to ask and I think they want to see how you handle a situation when placed on the spot. Again, it's no big deal. Obtaining your degree and going on to be the best dental provider you can be is what counts. I went on to do a residency, have had a lot of good opportunities practicing and now I'm transitioning into teaching with quite a bit of interviews and potential offers. I believe "hiccups" in life make us stronger and better and show us and others what we're made of. It also gives us the opportunity to reach back and help others who may be in the same positions and it's definitely an opportunity to share your wisdom and experiences with those you mentor and teach. Best wishes to you. Keep striving. You'll do well.

My situation might be a little different but I had to take a full year leave of absence for a personal reason early on during dental school, came back, finished up strong, and ended up matching to my #1 OMFS program choice.

Keep grinding. It's worth it.
