Suppose after I got accepted into a medical school, I insulted a grad student supervisor I hated, with no other witnesses. Would he have any way of affecting my acceptance? Any letters/reports of my behavior without proof, would they hold any weight? He's not in any way linked to anything I'll have written down on my resume/application, but he does work under the advisor for my major.

Why would you risk this? Or have you already done it?

I'll just tell you that I really really hate this guy
Whether I've actually done it or not isn't necessary info

It's been said before that admission committees do not care for unofficial letters of praise/castigation.
I imagine your case fits this category too (although I could be mistaken).

Well it is. If you've already done it, then you should worry if this results in any institutional action which you would be obligated to report to the school. There's a small chance this could affect your acceptance.

If you haven't done it, don't do it.

Is insulting someone considered worthy of an I.A.? Like cursing them out for less than 30 seconds or so, but just enough for them to know that I really hate them and to damage their pride. And there is no proof at all.

Could said grad supervisor make a report to your advisor and then advisor make report to the school for whatever their equivalent of unprofessional behavior is? Then could said school issue an institutional action which you would be obligated to report to accepted school? Yes. Is it likely? Probably not.

For your accepted medical school it would be nice to know what your behavior is when you don't have the motivation of potential repercussion hanging over you. Take this as a lesson. The action isn't worth the stress of the aftermath.

I love how you keep emphasizing this. Make sure you tell your really annoying patients this after you insult them.

Don't do it. I've seen several employees walk out of my office yelling, and while they think they have some satisfaction, everyone else is thinking -- "Are they f'in nuts?" Even if the person is unpleasant, you still look/are acting childish by throwing a tantrum. And if you think they will say "Well this undergrad is right -- I am ____", you're likely misguided. Alone, or with an audience, doesn't matter.

Just move on. It's practice for the many others that will madden you in life.

As a physician you're gonna meet a lot of people and statistically you will probably meet someone else you hate, will you conduct yourself in an unprofessional matter then? I mean what was the risk/reward if you chose to do it?

Yes, it is. It is assault.

What? For real? Walking up to someone, saying "f you" is assault?
If your victim feels threatened, yes.
If he reports it, the incident will be investigated.
The standards for an IA are far lower than for criminal charges.
If a preponderance of the evidence is in favor of the victim, you will be subject to the decision of the appropriate body at your school. IA is among the less severe judgements.

All I can say is grow up. You probably shouldn't have been accepted because you're being really immature.
I fully understand how immature this is, it's just gnawing at my ego.

Never burn bridges. Even if you think you'll never see this person again, it might come back to bite you in the ass. Everyone knows someone through someone.

Also, if you have posted it in this forum, it means your sixth sense is telling you that this is a bad idea. Don't do something you'll regret.

Assault is a stretch.

The person he is talking to would have to feel as if their life was in imminent danger.

For an IA he only has to feel threatened. This is not a criminal court.
School safety is under extreme scrutiny.

Not necessarily; even poking someone with a finger can be considered battery if the person says "Don't touch me."
And neither of these require proof? Although their claim would be pretty believable, I haven't seen this person in 6+ months so it'd be pretty weird for them to make it up

Exactly. It was be pretty weird to make it up. That alone would warrant an investigation.

If you are referring to how much time has passed, then you are right. The odds of the aggrieved making a complaint are lower over time. However, a preponderance of evidence is all it would take (a 51% chance) for an IA. Previous acts, supportive statements from those who have overheard threats or derogatory comments could all contribute to the decision going against you.

Come on, man. You're going to be a doctor. Don't act like a baby.

Come on, man. You're going to be a doctor. Don't act like a baby.

And on top of that, when you're at the bottom of the totem pole in healthcare, the residents and attendings will give you hell and likely make you feel way worse. The time to build thick skin is now.

OP, sometimes people suck- and those people may be in positions of equal or greater authority than you. When you act like a sh*thead to someone who is your equal, it casts into question what you would do to those who may have less authority than you in the future.

Exploding at people isn't cool, bro. How will you handle yourself after you work a long shift (or are a resident and tired as hell) and then someone makes a jab at you? Are you going to flip **** then?

If nothing else, get the rage thing checked out. Regardless of whether or not it comes back to bite you in the ass in the form of an IA.

Except, you know, publicly admitting that the incident happened on a message board that your classmates could be reading right now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

He said, she said.

EDIT: unless the person has their cell phone on and is recording you. You never know, right?

Actually, whether or not you've done it IS necessary info. If you've done it, there's nothing you can do now to undo it, so your only course of action is just to hope nothing comes of it. If you haven't done it, you should consider the fact that there is a possibility (even if it is small) that this will screw you over in a huge way, and doing this will not have any benefit to you. Aka, there is nothing to gain and everything to lose. If you haven't done it, then don't. If you've done it, there's nothing to be done about it now.

I appreciate that you took the effort to make the text green.

Pre-meds in this thread and legal definitions/advice remind me of Ben Carson and vaccine/autism claims.

You are like... This is simple stuff that hasn't changed in forever, but you know nothing about it and I feel like you should. But why would you? You are a pre-med (or a Neurosurgeon).

What? For real? Walking up to someone, saying "f you" is assault?

It takes you ~30 seconds to say "f you"? Any "cursing out" that approaches 30 seconds would be a pretty long tirade/tantrum.

Anyway, whether or not there are repercussions, you certainly have nothing to gain from the behavior. It probably won't be reported. The individual you're dealing with is an adult, and probably won't go cry to anyone about being yelled at by some petulant kid. However, the immaturity and/or emotional issues that contribute to your desire to interact with a person in this manner will likely create issues for you down the road.

Time to learn how to have an adult conversation. If the guy has legitimately wronged you and you want to let him know how you feel, go speak with him. Don't throw a temper tantrum. Just calmly state your case. If you can't do this, leave it alone (and find a profession that doesn't require maturity or emotional stability).

Ugh, Ben Carson makes me breathe fire. As someone who has autism (DSM-IV Asperger's), and is engaged to someone with autism (DSM-IV Kanner's), he just rubs me the wrong way. Not to mention the litany of stupid crap he's said about LBGT people. >/

On topic, though- OP, please don't have a tantrum if you haven't had one yet. Hell, you could try the "write a hate letter" exercise to him and never give it to him. It might help with the anger without all the fallout.
