Can any recent graduates provide a timeline of what happens after graduation? My family wants to plan a trip this summer and I'm trying to figure out if it will even be a remote possibility of going with them.

I'll graduate dental school around the third week of May 2016. I have not yet done BOLC. Approximately when will this start? Early to mid June perhaps? Secondly, when I'm done with this, how long do we typically have before we show up to our duty station? Is there a date (Example: August 1/15/30) that all new grads start on?
Lastly, would there be anything prohibiting me from traveling outside of the country (to Europe or somewhere similar) in any of this in-between time?

Thanks!

Here's how it works in the world's finest navy. You will be given your orders with officer training as an intermediate activity prior to reporting to your ultimate command. Officer Development School courses start every 5 weeks. The Navy publishes these dates and they can be found with a Google search. The classes can fill up quickly, so one might want to voice any preferences to the detailer.

I left for ODS the day of my graduation. I finished training on a Friday and reported the following Monday. So, I had no break between dental school and becoming the tip of the spear, or at least the lashing holding the spear tip to the shaft.

As far as traveling OCONUS goes, it can be a pain to get permission. I also believe travel restrictions are in place for travel to Europe, given the recent actions of some nefarious ISIS turds. I feel like an email was sent out about this that I didn't read, because I have no intentions of traveling any time soon.

Hope this helps.

You begin your obligation to the Army and come on Active Duty when you begin training at BOLC (if not previously completed). You don't complete BOLC and then get released for an extended period of time to hand out for the rest of summer. Based upon where you are going to be stationed you will be granted some transition time. Any time that you take in addition to the authorized transition time comes out of your vacation days (30 a year) - however remember that you will not have earned more than 2.5-5 days when BOLC is done, so you would be going in the hole. Other things such as if you are doing a 1 yr AEGD would also play into when you have to arrive. My recommendation is to get to your new location in the authorized amount of time, and take any vacations prior to BOLC. Prior to BOLC you wouldn't have to get any permissions to travel OCONUS. After you join you will have to do some online training, attend a security brief for the location you are going to and receive permission.
