i am an acquaintance of someone who is premed and also works in the admissions office at the med school she will be applying to. She has access to current applicants applications and reads their personal statements and shares people’s stories from their personal statements such as those of abuse and sexual assault with her friends. She even shares the names of these people and looks them up on social media, shows their pictures etc. I feel like these actions don’t match the characteristics of a doctor such a professional, confidential, respectful etc. I have debated reporting her but am not sure? Any advice?

I agree with you. I'd report her.

Wait how is a premed able to work in medical school admissions and review applicants’ essays? Why not assign these responsibilities to med students?

As an undergrad? I don’t believe you.

But if I did, it’s irrelevant to their premed status. It does happen to be a violation of conduct rules for school employees though so I would tell the employer

She's supposed to sort through applications. She has no influence in the admissions process but I don't believe she is allowed to read through the applications either but still does.

I dont think she is supposed to read through the applications but does anyway. She has no influence in the overall admissions process though. I think her job is to sort through applications based on age, ethnicity etc.

Yet another reason to not write about extremely sensitive topics, e.g., sexual assault, in your PS.

Make sure you find out whether she’s allowed to read through them or not before doing anything

This almost certainly against her contract... in your position I'd feel a moral duty to report. Also in the age of computers...

We don't have time for that lol, that's for paid staff to do. If medical students were given the responsibility they'd just click outstanding in every box to get back to their actual work

I meant having med students voluntarily helping out admissions. A lot of schools have med students as interviewers and adcom members so having med students read, sort through and evaluate essays would help. In any case, med students are more reliable for admissions than premeds. They know what they want in their classes and can help the faculty out.

I don’t think she should be allowed to do that. She gains unfair insider information about the admissions process for that school. If anything, the school should hire more admissions staff to work on this.

Most schools have a whistleblower system, where you can anonymously report behavior that is unethical or against institutional policy. This will forward your concern to someone who will investigate her contract/job duties and reported behavior to determine if and what action should be taken. I would look into this, typically searching for "Report a Concern" within the schools website should probably get you started. If you feel that you should do this, file the report and then it can be out of your hands.

This school needs to be sued for incompetence - pathetic!

I honestly wouldn't trust the sort of students that volunteer for that much extra work to do that sort of extra work lol. Oh god, they'd pick nothing but bleeding heart nonsense.

Yup, report her to the Admissions dean. Then it's his/her problem, not yours.

I agree. If I am finishing with my volunteering shift and somewhere someone asks "hey man can you put in like three more hours of work to file a bunch of documents?", I'd come up with some half *** excuse and go play fortnite instead 🤣

Playing that over pubg is practically an ethics violation in and of itself

I've worked in admissions for 3 years at my undergrad. This would certainly be grounds for termination and a huge violation of FERPA law which protects the academic information of students. If you haven't yet, please report this person because not only is she doing something unethical, she could get the institution in a world of trouble.
