I posted here earlier about doing a case report in Ophtho. I was googling about ophthalmology in my hometown and came across something I think may be worthy of a case report. However, I read about the case in a non-medical publication so wanted to get some feedback on whether the condition is actually as rare as the article had made it sound.

So here is the case in summary: teenaged girl presents with rapidly deteriorating vision. 20/300 left, 20/50 right. Diagnosed as Stargardt's. Received a single treatment of visudyne. At 6 weeks, vision had improved to 20/50, 20/30. Last checkup 20/30+, 20/20.

Is this a rare case?
Is that the standard treatment?
Is that a standard response to the treatment?

Coincidently, I happen to know both the physician and the patient, so figured if this was something rare, I could definately get access to more information and attempt a submission.

PDT with Visudyne is not a treatment for Stargardt's. It is used to treat vascular diseases of the choroid and retina, particularly choroidal neovascularization in the setting of macular degeneration. It has also been used to treat central serous choroidopathy and certain vascular tumors. If the patient in question truly has Stargardt's disease, the PDT was likely given to treat secondary choroidal neovascularization, which is a reported complication. There have been more recent reports of intravitreal treatment (e.g., Lucentis, Avastin) for that entity, which is a newer technique, so reporting on PDT would unfortunately not be that interesting.
