I'm a little confused about how high school coursework gets reported to AMCAS. Specifically, the HS I attended has a reciprocal agreement with all of the IS colleges in my state, so that students from that HS that go to college in-state get credit for certain HS coursework (assuming they made at least a B in the class, I think). However, apparently, not all of the IS colleges grant the same credit for the same HS courses - it would all depend on how many credit hours the course is worth at that particular institution. (For example, one IS school awards 4 hours for Physics, while another awards 5 hours.) Also, from looking at my two UG transcripts (I have a bachelor's degree from the IS school I went to right after HS, and another from the school where I'm now doing a DIY post-bac), they don't list the same HS courses as transfer credits. (For example, my first school's transcript awarded math credit for Algebra, Pree-cal, Trig, and Calculus, but the second only lists Calculus under my transfer credits.) Furthermore, the school I'm at now lists my HS grades on the transcript (although they aren't included in my UG GPA - same as the courses from my previous UG degree), while the transcript from my first university does not list HS grades - just the courses and credit hours.

My question is this: Is it my responsibility to figure out which HS courses to report to AMCAS? If so, should I report the HS courses for which I got credit at UG 1, UG 2, or all HS courses for which I got credit at either UG? Or am I meant to just send AMCAS a HS transcript and let them sort it out?

I'm also wondering if my HS grades for college credit will be part of my uGPA for AMCAS purposes. I initially assumed they would not be, since my first UG transcript doesn't even include the grades, just the credit hours. But then, when I realized that my second UG transcript does include grades from HS transfer courses, it made me wonder how AMCAS handled this kind of thing. For my part, I'd love to have my HS grades included in my uGPA - it bumps my sGPA from a 3.3 to a 3.7.

Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere in the forums. I searched, but didn't see anything that answered my questions.

If it appears on any college transcript, you will have to include it. But you won't send your high school transcripts -- you will just send UG1 and UG2 transcripts. If you took a class that could have transferred as college credit but didn't at either one of your specific undergraduate institutions, then it wouldn't count.

They WILL count towards your undergraduate GPA if you add a grade for the course, but it would have to be a grade from the college transcripts. I had two different forms of college credit in high school -- some were dual enrollment and showed up with a grade on my college transcripts which DID count towards my AMCAS GPA (even though like you they did not count towards that colleges GPA), while others transferred differently without a grade listed and those did not count for a grade.

So it sounds like you would get to count anything that was listed on your UG2 transcript towards your GPA since that included grades, but the things that are listed on your UG1 transcript only and do not have grades listed with them would not count towards your GPA (even if you may know the grades from HS transcripts -- these don't count because they don't want HS transcripts, they want the transcripts from the college you got credit from.)

That makes perfect sense. Thanks so much!

Oh, I guess I was under the impression that I would need to input every single that appears on every single college transcript. I assumed I would be expected to input everything from my first transcript in my listing of things that are on the second transcript, since I got transfer credit for my entire first time through. No? I have no idea what the layout of the application is like, so I'm clueless here.

That is very confusing.

I know, and I'm sorry. I tried to explain it as clearly as I could, but hey, I'm kinda confused about it, too, and I actually KNOW what I mean.

Yes, that instruction makes sense for courses originally attempted at colleges. I'm asking about courses originally attempted at high school, not specifically for credit at any particular university. The high school transcripts themselves are irrelevant for AMCAS purposes, so the instruction doesn't provide much in the way of guidance. AMCAS won't receive the "official transcript of the school where they were originally attempted."

FWIW, I will certainly read all of the directions forward and backward before applying, but since I won't be able to submit my application for another seven months, I will admit that I haven't thoroughly gone over the instructions yet. I was just wondering if my high school coursework had the potential to impact my uGPA.

I only got college credit for them when I actually went to college. They were required for my HS diploma, and then they got counted as transfer college credits when I went to each college, but different colleges count them differently. Is that what you're asking?

They aren't quite like AP credit - it's more of a reciprocal arrangement between this one HS and the IS colleges. The HS teaches college-level classes, and state colleges recognize that fact in order to "sweeten the pot" as it were, to induce students to attend this rigorous residential (but public) high school. It's all set up through the state legislature, which is why only IS schools award the credit.

If you got college or AP credit, you have to put it on, AND order transcripts from the schools the credit was given through.

Like on my transcripts from undergrad it says something like "transfer credit from School X, transfer credit from School Y" etc. and i had to order individual transcripts from each of those schools. It's extremely annoying.
