Who's applying to state schools? I feel surrounded by people applying to Harvard, Yale, WashU and Hopkins....

Give me some love people...I wanna go cheap!!!

Your home state or others?

I'll be doing both myself.

Me too. I just can't see spending 35K/year in tuition at a private school when my state school is so great. However, if I don't get in to UNC, I'll probably go to a private school. I don't like the idea of going to a state school as an out-of-stater and paying way more than the in-staters.

Woo woo, yay Indiana...

I wish I lived in Pennsylvania...or Michigan...or Texas...or North Carolina...

Ohio resident applying to all the Ohio state schools!

MCO's tuition is looking really good compared 35k/year for tuition

ohio resident, applying to 3 state schools, here.

I thought PA didn't have a state school.

Woohoo, MICHIGAN!

So do we cali students get to count UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, etc...?

I think the big difference in going to a "state" school vs. a private school is who your students are(in-staters vs. out of staters). So in that regard, going to UCI, UCSD, or UCD would be very much like an indiana resident going to their state school, or a Florida resident going to USF.

Since UCSF and UCLA accept more out of staters, it's not quite the same.

I think it is reasonable to suggest that most everyone applies to his/her state school. I am not aware of anyone who only applied to the top 10 USNWR schools...

That said, I think some state schools are getting almost as expensive as private schools. My state school (UMD) turned out to be significantly more expensive than several private schools. A lot of states are suffering in this economy and students are paying the price...

How is UMD significantly more expensive than several private schools? Most private schools cost more than $20000... esp. for out-of-staters. Plus most of us get a $3000 grant (or so I've heard), so $17000 isn't that bad....

dont forget about 👍 mayo medical school 👍
http://www.mayo.edu/mms/

everybody gets a scholarship

you either pay $0, ~$5,000, or ~$11,000 depending on what scholarship you get and what state you are from.

only about 😱 42 😱 students per class with a prof:student ratio of like 10:1

plus, mayo clinic is one of the best hospital systems in the world - see below

Ya I think we get the Mayo thing. You don't have to keep posting their stats. Everyone knows that it is a top school.

For better or worse, I mostly applied to state schools. My two state schools, 6 out-of-state state schools, and 4 private schools.

dude said mayo sucks
he needed to be educated

You need to be educated beotch. I work there right now, and I wouldn't go there if they paid me. The town is boring, the people are stuck up and rude (look at you), and they don't have a teaching network set up...there is a reason there are 42 people, the med school is in a small brick building the size of my house.

yeah, the medical school is a small brick building .... attached to one of the largest and greatest hospitals in the WORLD. the medical school building is just where the med school offices/student lounge, etc are located - d**khead. classes aren?t held there. classes (which are usually taught by the world's leading experts) are held all in Guggenheim, the gonda building, and other places.

they probably wouldn?t take you anyway - so that works out for everybody

don?t have a teaching network? Ok??. we are taught by world leaders in just about every field imaginable. i don?t know what you are talking about.

there are only 42 students because they only take the best. and give each a scholarship. thats why j**kass!

furthermore, i am neither stuck up nor rude. just want everybody to apply to mayo, just getting the word out. not many people know about the financial aid package even though they know its one of the greatest medical centers in the WORLD.

dont have a teaching network set up? that is just hilarious. mayo is known for its excellent teaching, profs fight to teach, they actually want to teach, not like many other places where they are forced to teach medical students. there are so many world experts at mayo, they dont have to force anybody to teach medical students. with a prof:student ratio of 10:1 or something like that. the highest in the country

no teaching network my a-- 😡

Easy on defending Mayo. It's not like he's insulting your mom.

Back the the whole point of the thread, I am applying to 3 NY schools, but am not sure if any of them are really my top choice. Cost wise, definitely, but we'll see.

good luck wherever you end up  😍 😍
