I am starting to look into the option of going to Pharmacy School. However, I have never heard about a pre-pharmacy program at my school. What exactly do you have to take to apply to Pharm School?

Thanks

There's a handy little FAQ stickied at the top of the pre-pharmacy forum, but for convenience, here's a direct link: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=139936.

Please take the time to read over it. It's very helpful and informative and a lot of hard work and dedication was put into it by several forum members. 🙂

Actually some schools don't have programs. I go to UCI and there's no pre-pharmacy program or pre-med program. you actually can just major in anything, but you need to take all the pharmacy pre-reqs. It's easiest to major in Biology because you'll be fulling the pre-reqs as you fullful the requirment for a bio degree.

That's definitely true. Although for some schools the requirements are slightly different than other schools, so you should definitely do your research and for your top choices (if you decide to pursue pharmacy) and make sure you are fulfilling all of their pre-reqs. As an example, I went to UOP and they require Human Anatomy, but every other school in Cali requires Physiology. =P Little things like that can be a headache later on, but I'm sure you're more on top of things than I was back then. 🙂

The interesting thing about pschool is that many programs don't even require a BSc or BA (though MANY applicants have them..)
-Some schools require the "PCAT", other schools do not.
-Some schools used the "pharmcas.org" website for the initial application and others do not.(most have supplemental applications on top of the pharmcas application, and the supp app can be pretty extensive, too- like UCSF.)
a good resource is any of the pharmacy professional organization websites, like http://www.aphanet.org/

also, pharmacy.org & pharmcas.org are also good places to start.

The science prerequisites vary for almost every school..

At the very least: 1 year of Physics, 1 year of Gen Chem, 1 year of Ochem, 1 year of Calculus, 1 year of Bio, 1 semester each of speech, econ, and psychology are usually standards, and some schools also require microbio, biochem, as well, and some schools even more. It all varies and you have to look into the requirements for each school. Not sure where you are, but in california, there is a website called assist.org that gives you an idea of what courses are accepted as prerequisites from other CA schools.

good luck!

That's great advice. It's also a very useful website, although I believe it only does courses for the state funded universities (Cal State, UC) and junior colleges only. There are no private school courses listed on that website or out of state universities. In that case, you would have to email/call the particular pharmacy school and ask for an accepted course list, and if that is not available, to send them the courses you are/have taken along with a course description from your school so they can assess if it's transferrable or not. Hope that helps.
