I guess the moderator deleted my other post due to posting of the last four of people's SSN (P.S., that is why we have gone with just the last four...without the full SSN [esp. without full names and/or birth dates] it is VERY hard to commit identity theft/fraud/nefarious activity).
Negative. The last four are VERY useful for identity theft. Many banks and other financial institutions use last four digits of SSN as confirmation of identity for telephone transaction approvals.

So there's the potential for abuse. With a list of dozens of navy officers, I could call up Navy Federal, guessing that many of them would have accounts, and see what kind of fun I could have.

I'd recommend deleting the names and SSNs before forwarding that document on. You might be fine with the security of it, but odds are lots of folks on the list wouldn't be.

An active duty officer posted that? Unbeliveable.

Posting or PM'ing that document to strangers is beyond unprofessional. I'm not a JAG officer, but I can't imagine how that is not criminal.

Moderator, do any of these posts get archived in Google or elsewhere? Can SDN delete PM's with that info or ensure that the old pages are not archived anywhere on the net?

Don't get your panties in a bunch. The Navy always posts the list on their website. The other thing is the information is obtainable by the FOIA. Next time we can sanitize any numbers out. The list also doesn't violate operational security either IMHO.

You do realize, of course, that the GMESB itself has posted the list on the internet for at least the last 6 or 8 years. I think this might be the first year they have restricted the above page to government/military IP addresses.

I know last year I could access it from home.

Everybody chill out ... 🙂

Wrong. The Navy posts that list on a secure DoD website that in previous years was password protected and now is only available on a DOD computer.

Posting the names and last 4 of active duty officers on a public forum is not cool and is absolutely indefensible. I'm not saying that it is espionage, but it is in no way over the top to feel angry about this example of terrible judgment.

The document was deleted and it was recommended that the poster not forward around the document because it contains personally identifying information. The poster is a longtime SDN user and has always been professional.

It's the military that is way too lax about personal information getting out to the public much more than any individual.

All right, due to all the controversy, any offers to forward the match list are hereby withdrawn. Sorry, folks, you'll have to get the list some other way

If you wanted to just delete the names and SSNs from the document, I doubt anyone would have any problem with it. But that's probably more effort than you need right now...

Okay, lets use some common sense here. How many people out there have access to a .gov or .mil IP? Millions? At least several hundred thousand! Also, I have no doubt that any remotely skilled hacker could easily spoof such an IP if they wanted.

So if this information is such a security threat, well then the damage has already been done. In the military we give out the last four of our SSN about 10 times per day though, so I doubt it's that much of a security threat. I've never heard of a bank ask for only the last four of your SSN to confirm identity. They typically ask for the full SSN plus additional personal information.

I wear dog tags that have my complete social security number with full name. You'll get no argument from me about the military and identity security.

Nonetheless, there are rules about these things. If you're cool with sending out your name and the last 4 of your SSN, hab at it. But sending out someone else's without their consent isn't appropriate. The military may not take it seriously, but many individuals do.

Sorry for all the duplicate posts. I wasn't trying to be obnoxious. SDN had some sort of hiccup this morning which didn't display the posts after they were added.

Is the Navy match list posted above the full match or GME-2+?

How about GME 1? Was there a list? I got an individual email.
