Hey guys!

I'm a newbie here at SDN, and I'm so glad I've found this community 😀

Im an international student (Im currently not studying in the States nor do I hold a US passport/citizenship) and I know that makes the admission field even more competitive for me. I was wondering how much will doing research over the summer affect my chances? I'm definitely looking into some BS/MS programs (they are just part of my list, but still), and I was told that research/internships weighs pretty heavily on admissions...

Personally I'm not really that into research studies - if I were to do medicine (which I am going to 😀) I'd much prefer clinical practice than academic medicine - so I'm pretty interested to know how much exactly research/internship may boost my resume.

If it doesn't affect much...I'm considering taking boxing classes....:naughty:

What do you guys think???

It REALLY depends on the school. Some of the more research focused schools such as Harvard essentially REQUIRE research, while some don't care quite as much. At UVMCOM (University of Vermont College of Medicine) it really isn't that necessary to be honest. They understand that many people simply aren't interested in research so why make them do it? Medicine is partly about research and partly about clinical practice. However, keep in mind that having research experience can ONLY HELP YOU. Especially if you're an international student. You will have trouble getting into public colleges as they are funded by the federal government. Apply to some private schools.

Research can only help, and some people (the adventurous types) end up falling in love with it. Its also a great way to get a good letter of rec because you'll be working closely with professionals doing challenging work as opposed to volunteering or shadowing, which are sometimes very passive experiences.
