Is research as important for DO schools as MD schools? I understand that some MD schools do not place heavy importance on research, but in general, do DO schools place the same importance on research?

I only ask because it's actually my strongest EC.

Thank you.

Sure. There's plenty of DO schools that place huge importance on research. Other schools, not so much. But it's a great EC to have, especially if you have publications/presentations.

I would tailor your applications towards the research schools. In your secondary essays, place heavy emphasis on the research you did, what you learned, etc...Schools to consider include UMDNJ-SOM, KCUMB, CCOM, TUCOM-NY, NYCOM. There are definitely more, but I can't remember them off the top of my head...I'm sure the SDN-ers will be able to help you out!

Research is, by far, my strongest EC as well. I'm still really early in the application cycle, but I got quick interview responses from LECOM-Bradenton, VCOM-CC, and WCU-COM. I'm still waiting on decisions at two other schools. I made no secret of my plans to blend clinical care and clinical research in a non-primary care field... but I also have a long history of working in this field. It doesn't seem to be hurting me too much at these particular schools, but I also haven't reached a point where I've gotten accepted/rejected.

I have visited some DO and MD schools in the past month...The general consensus I got was that research typically only makes a huge difference in your app if you got published.

For MD schools almost 80% or so of applicants have a decent amount of research. For DO it's not as big a deal if you don't, but it can help your application if you do have some.

Osteopathic schools don't usually conduct a lot of basic science research, so it's not going to help you in the sense that you might be thinking.

But what you might not be thinking about right now is that you'll likely be interviewed by at least 1 basic science professor. It wouldn't hurt to have something on your app that they can identify with.
