I am 1st year student and was curious to know if research is a required part of a competitive residency. I am not sure what I want to go into, but was curious to know if I have to do research this summer.

First year medical student?

Research is something that is necessary for many competitive specialties in surgery/derm/ent/CT/NS/plastics, particularly in academic programs. Additionally there are many academic university IM programs that will look for some sort of scholarly output.
