research and university programs - is it a necessity?

how crucial is it to have research experience during med school in order to get into a Peds Program in a University setting in the NorthEast??

not crucial. if you're part of a research project, it helps to have a paper that you're an author on-- otherwise just doing research doesn't mean much. I did a little research in college, NONE in med school and matched at a great northeast program. many of my resident colleagues in my class didn't do research. so not an issue.
