Hey everyone!

I'm doing my undergrad at the University of Washington and recently spoke with someone who claimed the teach at the UWSOD. They told me that UW prefers students who have done research.

I'm wondering if anyone can confirm this or know whether this is actually true...

Cannot confirm, but some schools may prefer students with experience in research, especially the ones heavily involved (Harvard, UCSF, etc.). All in all, I loved my research experience, you learn so much and it is so refreshing to be able to apply your knowledge and be creative. I feel like it also looks nice on your resume, and in a way sets you apart from other applicants who lack that. Obviously it also depends on what your research is based on. For example , if it's based on ecology than that's not really as applicable as experience in molecular biology/biochemistry (or obviously dental research).

My piece of advice, especially if you're an underclassman: get involved in research. Even if d-schools don't care about it, it'll pay dividends in your education and teach you to be more independent in your work (absolutely essential to dentistry/healthcare).

This is slightly off topic, but "applicable" research can be in an area other than biomedical. Any decent research experience will aid in the development of skills required for critical data consumption, which is something you can sell hard when applying to... pretty much anything.
