Hi, I hear people say on this forum that doing research is looked upon higher than job shadowing. Can any science research do, or are people talking about research dental related?

Hi,
I believe it depends on the school you are aiming to. Most clinical schools will want to see that you have good exposure to the field. Research is optional. But with research school, research experience is a lot more imperative. (of course there is always exception). For both kinds of school you still have to prove that you know what you're getting yourself into. I do not think you have to do dental research to qualify. As for me, I did cancer and cardiovascular research, and that was enough to get me into UPENN. I think what they're looking for is the ability to carry out research projects and pursue your interest, not specifically dental-related.

Good luck and take care. 🙂

I agree with cobecana:

I remember at Temple Mark Lombard discouraged us from going there if we had any interest in research. So at Temple is wasn't even required. However, many schools, especially the most competitive schools research is always looked upon with regard. However, I think you are in good shape either way.

Research will NEVER be counted against you when you apply to dental schools. However, its level of importance to whether you get in or not, depends on the school itself.

The type of research project you pursue.....(for the most part), does not matter. Just make sure it interests you, and that you are able to speak coherently about it during your interview.....just in case you are asked. 😀
