Can a standard MD student do research during his 4 years? I would like to continue with research but am not interested in an MD/PhD program (All the MD/PhDs I talk to say they regret not going MD). Are there any schools that are particularly good in this respect?

I wouldn't want to do MD/PhD either... Would much rather just do an MD and do maybe a 2 year post-doc/research fellowship if I wanted to go into research (and yes, this is financially the better route keeping all else constant no matter how you crunch the numbers, assuming you start at least at a modest $150k~).

Anyway, standard MD students can definitely do research between the 1st and 2nd year, and also between the 2nd and 3rd year. Many also do research during the year.

Stanford's regular MD program requires that you do a scholarly concentration and research thesis. Harvard's HST MD program also requires a research thesis. Note that these are probably the hardest two programs to get into.
