research before residency

sorry in advance b/c i'm sure this is a much-repeated topic. tried searching this forum and came up with 15 pages of conversations and the first few pages didn't have the answer...
so, how important is research exp/publications to get into residency? i have a good board score, good grades in rotations. but would like to get into a school in the bay area and want to maximize my chances. what do you think?

If you looking to go to a place like UCSF and possibly stanford, then research is must...otherwise it's just icing on the cake.
