When is a good time to begin thinking about doing research during intern year for preparation of one's application for fellowship? How does this impact the way one tries to request a schedule for intern year (i.e. vacation scheduling, sub-speciality scheduling, etc)?

research during intern (to my knowledge) is the exception, not the rule.

it's tough, but can be done. your best bet is to find a PI and set up research for your r2 year.

Talk with your seniors and identify excellent mentors. If anything make an attempt at doing reearch starting midway intern yea.
First 6 months are very critical. Work hard and concentrate on building a good clinical rotation and start looking around.
6 months later you would have had a reputation (hopefully good) and you can start doing the ground work for your research.
But as u will find it is hard to combine internship and research but possible especially if u hav some experience in research

What kind of research are we talking about here? writing up a case? chart review? working on a review article with a mentor? writing a protocol? basic science? it matters because each one of those is a completely different experience.

Internship is tough and generally not designed for research (unless you're in a really cushy place) but what you need to do is identify the right mentor and the right project to work on during your PGY-2 and 3. If you happen to have some extra time and want to do something during internship, go for it. Chances are slim though so don't get too hung up on it.

That's kind of how I'm trying to do it. I'm an intern and got hooked into a project with another resident. Basically spent the latter part of this year on setting the groundwork/doing the IRB stuff. Then the project will be down the road. No hurry. There's enough medicine to learn.
