I was wondering how everyone's research experience went---if any...and if they considered it of good weight in terms of helping humanity and such...

I am definitely NOT a lab research person. I knew that from the moment I did chemistry lab in college. Everyone says you should do lab work, but I don't necessarily think that's true. Instead, I did what I was most interested and passionate about - environmental health and environmental justice issues (public health issues). I enjoyed my research and I think it helped differentiate me from the rest of the med school applicants. So just choose research that you are interested in and your enthuisasm for that research will show through in your interviews and essays.

i did two summers of research and loved both experiences. i've since decided that i'm not a "research person" but i don't for a second regret my time spent in those labs. i think research is exciting bc it's cutting edge science...

through my research, i've found amazing mentors... people in the field (MDs, PhDs, MD/PhDs) who have supported and encouraged me to no end. it's great to form bonds with these people.

in terms of helping humanity... i like to think my research has at least in some small contributed to the growing vat of scientific knowledge, no matter how imperceptible.

Did Opthamology research (cataract formation). It rocked. Handling human tissues is a rush, some incredible person gave their eyes to science and you have the privilege to work with that tissue. That's an awesome feeling to me, anyone else?

Physics and chem labs have very little in common with research experience. I remember always contemplating suicide right before physics and chem labs. I seriously considered negotiating a deal with the physics department especially. I thought about volunteering for them to pass 4 million MegaVolts of electricity through my eyeball to see the effect. If I survived the ordeal, I would never have had to set foot in a physics lab ever again 😀 .

My research experience on the other hand was beautiful. It was fun interacting with the grad students. My mentor is a punk rocker 😎 and he's very smart and down to Earth (hopefully not lower though 😀 ). I got to go on mad retreats, conferences, name it. I was balling out of control. I even used to skip class like mad to hang out in the lab.

I did reserach in psychology studying how infants as young as 3 1/2 months old come to understand emotional expressions. It was fun cuz I got to interact with the moms and babies.

As far as helping humanity, the research does have implications into the understanding of development and possibly the effects of different parental emotional problems on their children. So I would say that, yes, the research was doing some good in the world.

Oops! to finish answering the original question:

No my research has not benefitted humanity. It has benefitted me though, by helping me choose a career path, and get accepted into med school(MD/PhD). I intend for my research to someday be extremely beneficial to all of mankind. Unfortunately, that day is not today. probably no time soon even. hee hee <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" />

hey,

i do research right now and i F#$*ing hate it. i only did it to get into school. i had good EC's with the exception of research because i knew i would hate it, but i did it anyway. my theory is that sometimes you have to do things you hate if it will help you in the end. i guess that is part of growing up and being an adult.
