Can you elaborate on how you find yourself in this situation?
As a general suggestion, look at the NIH list of anes and surg depts with the highest funding. Not sure about the link - look through my old posts - it's in there somtime in the last 6 months.

well let me tell you, I am FMG completed 2 years of residency, cannot find categorical postion therefore looking for research fellowship to get some more credits. If I fail to find surgery will go anesthesia (though will be tragedy for me).
Is there any other options rather than NIH, cuase NIH usually sponsors 2-year programs. I would prefer 1 year.
thansk for responce anyway

The problem with one year research fellowships is that you will only have the first few months or research, and nothing to show for it before you apply for the match again. However, since you are posting now in late August, it sounds like you want something very very last second and are thinking of reapplying again next year? In that case, I am sorry to say I don't personally know of much research available this late.

If it is going to be such a tragedy to go into anesthesia, 2 years may be worth it at NIH, however, I understand family and other issues too. After 2 prelim years though, and following last year's full match, I would think about alternatives.

Finally, to help make a decision and to network, what have your prelim institutions told you? They should be able to give you honest feed back about the possibility of research helping or not, whether you have good chances or not based on your performance, etc.

Good luck.

Try the ECMO fellowship at Wake Forest. Paid, surgical, and the guy who just finished is now a cat gen surg there. It is a hard year, but would probably help you career. Contact the Surgery Dept. The Fellowhip is run by Mike Hines, a Pedi Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Depends on what your 2 years are in, but could be worth a try.
