Hey all heres the deal.

I got some research finally lined up for the summer and Year 2 about 2-3 projects for ortho. Here is the deal, they are clinical research and I just heard that clinical research wont help you get into ortho? WTF? Can anyone please shed some light on this!

Clinical publications help but being more straightforward they are more common than basic science publications. Thus they won't help AS MUCH.

So is it worth even doing, or am I wasting my time? (the Dr I am doing it for is the Director of orthopedics, so I will be getting a great letter or rec after this is over)

Are you doing it for the letter or for the research? If it's the former, don't count on getting a great letter unless you perform, which you won't if you don't want to do the latter. You're probably wasting your time.

I love that you demand that only smart people reply, but screwed up the difference between "your" and "you're". I laughed. 😉

Some people here are just brutal! 😉

I didn't respond because smart can be so subjective. There needs to be an objective measure of smart in the title like "Only those who honored Biochem, Neuro, Path and Pharm and high-passed the wishy-washy-touchy-feely classes."

Haha, damn you caught me! I guess thats why I didnt reply!😀

I am doing it not to get a letter nor to get a research per say. I am doing the research to get into ortho. I will get published on the research (i hope) and then hopefully get a letter of rec!

But is clinical good research!

Go ahead and do the clinical research. It has more direct relevance to the subject matter. If you pick some esoteric binding pocket of the porforin ring around hydroxycobalamine as it interacts with receptors on osteoclasts then you're looking at the very real possibility your basic research might be so specific as to be irrelevant....which a lot of basic research can be. I speak from experience ....stupid hydroxycobalamine. Also even after years of basic research I don't even want to read papers about a lot of the basic research out there even in my own field.

Do you have any other options? Basic science projects related to Ortho?

If not, go for this project.

But your publications would still be helpful for residency even if their topic was so limited as to be irrelevant.

Agreed - for the most part, research is research, regardless of field.

In the OP's case, it helps that he'll secure a good letter.

Nothing will help you get into ortho. First and foremost you are going to have to make them want to spend 5 years of their life in close relations with you and I highly doubt you will be able to convince anyone to do that.
