I am an MS1 student and have been doing some research into anesthesiology as a potential future career. I am very much interested in doing some research along with clinical work in a hospital setting. Most of the job listings I have seen so far are from group practices that have some sort of a contract with hospitals. These practices only do clinical work. But I was not able to get any information on hospital positions and whether they involve any research. I would appreciate it if some one could explain if any hospital positions have research involved? If yes, do you know of any such hosiptals in the NY metropolitan area? and if possible, do you know what percentage of the job is devoted to research?

Thank you

if this is a career question, you pretty much will have to stay in academics to do research once you finish med school and your gas training. private practice jobs don't often leave a lot of room to engage in research. if however this is a current question because you are interested in doing research to show your interest in the field, then just wait until next summer and see if you can get involved in a project at your school. if you can't, don't worry. just shine in your third and fourth year clerkships and get good letters.

Thanks for your input. I want to be able to have a balance of both clinical as well as research duties. Are there jobs out there that have a good balance of both. For instance, maybe some hospitals out there let their gas people run a lab. If anyone has heard of such a program, please share. Also if going purely academic is the only way to do research, what are the pros and cons of that? Would I have to take a significant hit in salary?

I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thank you.

There is a plethora of jobs out there that fits your descriptive desires, all in the academic arena. With the right personality/stats/residency experience, you could write your own ticket at a "Big Playa" institution. Its people like you that advance our specialty, and I admire your aspirations.

Yes, going academic is the only way to do research, and yes, at least initially, your income will take a hit compared to a private practice job, probably 50% income potential in your first 5 years compared to a partner in a practice. But if research is your thing, go for it! Discover the first non-depolarizer that mimicks succinylcholine, or one-up Des or Sevo, and you'll be laughing at mine/UT's/Military's salaries with your multi-million dollar grants from Merck.

Think big, dude/dudette. If a combo of research/clinical is your bag, then &*cking go for it.

There are some academic dudes that make big bucks...leaders....discoverers...deft speakers. Find your niche and exploit it.

I'm afraid I cannot help you locating specific research institutes as I am not from the States. But what I want to tell you, is that you have chosen the right speciality to do research in 🙂 I myself have been doing research in neuroanaesthesia for a year, and still doing it. It's the best decision I ever made as an UG student. So best of luck with your research, keep us posted on how it goes.

Cheers.

Singh (or anyone else),

Could you expound upon the current 'hot-research-arenas' in anesthesiology? Anesthesia seems like a great choice for MD's who are interested in doing basic sci research (or clinical research) while maintaining clinical duties.

If anyone has experience working in anesthesia research, please enlighten us with the story of what you are working on and where you are working. This would be beneficial for those of us who are interested in research, but are on the fence as to future clinical career choice.

Thanks.
