Research or SMDEP?

I am a freshman and I applied to a freshman only summer research program at my college and also applied to SMDEP. Assuming I get into both, which one should I pick? I know I have to do research anyways but is research better to get over with during summer or do it during the school year? Also what exactly do you do in SMDEP?

Overall, which of the 2 would you pick if you got accepted into both?

SMDEP all the way. The program is very well respected and is a good way to get familiar with the diversity office of the place you attend. This is even more true for the big name SMDEP programs Like Yale Duke Columbia UCLA
