Hiyo
I am a 3rd year med student currently working on public health and hospital management projects. However, I suddenly have this worry that my project will not be beneficial for me if I were to aim for any subspecialty route.
What if I want to go into neonatology or cardiology? By the time I graduate from med school, I would not have done any research in those areas.
Just wondering, that's all...

Don't sweat it. You will have time during your residency to work towards your fellowship goals. You're not even really expected as a M3 to know what type of residency you want to do, much less a fellowship! So learn from your project now, and then in your residency work towards a specialty field. Hope this helps!

Agreed. I would also add that there is no necessity that your research focus accord with your subspecialty. I heard this several times on the interview trail for PICU fellowship and also saw a number of attendings who's research was not even close to PICU, some not even close to Peds. Any research will look good on your application.

Cool!
Thanks for the replies.
Ya... there are some kids in my class just freaking me out with their projects being so focused on certain specialties. Glad to know that I ain't closing any doors =D
Thanks.

The bolded sounds highly relevant to neonatology. Lots of neonatologists doing public health research. That will sound fine on the interview trail. Don't have to work with cells to do research.
