Research w/ Physician you shadow

Has anyone ever requested to do research with a physician that they were initially just shadowing?

I did some research (second author) with a physician I shadowed, but we had known each other for like 10 years and had trained (martial arts) together and stuff for years. Thats probably a very different situation than most shadowing experiences.
