Hi,

Have any of you ever done research with an optometrist before going onto Optometry school? I heard it looks better if you do research than if you shadow. I'll be honest, my gpa sucks as of now and I hope that an opportunity to research with an optometrist would look really good on my app, especially since I will be going to the same optometry school if I get in.

If you guys have done research, what was it like? Did it help your chances more than if you had shadowed with an optometrist?

Thanks!

First off, are you near an optometry school? I would worry about that first because lots, if not most optometric research is done at schools. The other option would be to get into a commercial research setting e.g. with Alcon or Bausch & Lomb...but I have no idea how you get involved with that kind of setting!

Hi,

, especially since I will be going to the same optometry school if I get in.

Thanks!

so you already have someone in mind and are asking if doing research is a good IDea?

Of course some research experience is always good...it definitely won't hurt your app 🙂

Yea I have an optometry school nearby me that I want to go to. I have already applied for the research position and I am starting next week but I was wondering if I should instead spend my time shadowing instead.

Thanks!

Good luck for you reseach position, i hope you will enjoy it!!

I was going through the same debate than you: shadowing or working in a research lab. Well, curiously, I noticed that I learned a lot more when I shadow than when I do lab work. I have volunteered and work in a lab, not with an optometrist, but something related to the eye. Anyways... but in comparison, I have to say that shadowing in different settings seems to be a benefit. It is fun, you get to meet people of all ages...

let us know how the research position goes!

I think the research looks good. Optometry schools are academic institutions and they may want to push you in the research/teaching direction. Everybody has to shadow to apply, so as long as you shadow a few different types of practices (corporate, private, single/partners, etc.) your shadowing should be fine.
