I think I am screwed over on 2 years of research experience from undergrad and I need some opinions as I am applying this cycle on what I can salvage if anything.

From 2005 to 2007+ I was designing programs in java to support research in the psych dept of my school. I designed several different versions and they all basically flash a stimulus of a face or eyes or whatever image you load and present some options that correspond to the perceived emotions the face seems to portray.

The research centered around autistic children.

It saved them from interviewing the children with pencil and paper tests and had a lot of convenient functions to save tests and break down the data, etc.

I made different versions for different projects of the grad students in the program and that was all good.

My prof was going to write me a letter then he dumped his wife and eloped with a grad student, sold his house and moved over to England. No this is not a troll.

His remaining grad students either followed him there or had no part in what I was doing. One person switched labs and decided to use other software.

Now he hasn't written me a letter and I have 2 year hole in my app where I claimed to do research, but I have no proof. It was a lot of work to engineer the apps and took a pretty deep knowledge of object oriented design with nothing to show for it.

Should I even mention this on my app? I have the software and all and it works, but I doubt anybody would look at it.

I am non trad and some of my other ECs include ~100hrs of volunteering, 2 years of ROTC, treasurer for a club and 2 Co-ops.

I also worked toward my pilots license in school until I ran out of money.

you don't need to have a letter from him....

you don't need to have a letter from him....

Agreed. While it does stink that he moved away (since you were banking on a LOR)...keep in mind that this would have been an extra letter anyway, as most DO schools require some combination of the following: science profs, pre-med committees/advisors, D.O.s...

You can discuss your research/computer experiences in your interviews without reservation...adcoms aren't going to require a letter to validate your experiences. Good luck to you! :luck:

I agree. Don't worry about it. Definitely mention it. You don't need to have it backed up by a letter. My letter writers kind of came form "left field" so to speak and it wasn't a problem.

Nobody asked me to prove I was an engineer for 15 years. Don't worry about it.

I also agree. I didn't have a letter from the professor I did 1 year of undergrad research with. It doesn't matter.

Definitely include this experience on your application!! 👍

You're fine. Yeah, it sucks you can't get an LOR from the prof. But you can still list the research experience and you should. Unless you publish (which most pre-meds do not) nobody can prove that they did anything. If the adcom were to have doubts, they will ask you about it at the interview and when you clearly demonstrate that you know your work backwards and forwards you would put the issue to rest.

Yeah it's definitely good to have on your application. During my interview, I was asked BRIEFLY about what I did...literally...and the next second, it was over. 😀
