Hi! I am an M2 who was hoping to take a research year, and had looked at Doris Duke Fellowships and HHMI Fellowships last year, but both programs recently ended funding to medical students. Would anyone know of other funding options for a research year in a surg subspecialty? And if anyone has any experience or advice on setting up / getting the most out of a research year at another institution (I'm not planning on doing my research year at my med school) without funding, I would love to hear it! Thank you!!

So many out there. NIH funded programs. Specialty specific ones through their societies.

It really depends on the subspecialty, as well as what your goals are. HHMI is almost all basic science. Any research year setup directly with attendings will most likely be clinical. Some research years are paid, a lot will give you a sub-sistence living stipend, and a ton don't pay anything. Some want you to manage one or two clinical trials, others will load you with whatever projects come up. Your ability to publish and make connections depends on all of these factors.

Thank you both for your replies!! I am interested in Urology and ENT, and want to take a year to conduct clinical and/or basic science research. I saw the NIH has a program, but I was really hoping I would be able to spend my research year at a specific institution I have in mind because I wanted to use the opportunity to learn more about the research the university offers, make connections with the professors and attendings, etc. to see if it would also be somewhere I would interested in applying to and/ or matching at. The only funded research fellowships I knew of that you can do at any institution were HHMI ans Doris Duke, and now they’re both gone 🙁

Would you know of any urology or ent - specific research funding opportunities or where I would be able to find them myself? Thank you so much!!
