I am interested in taking a year off after 3rd year and pursuing a research fellowship. There are two labs that I am interested in (both in the same field): one lab does basic science research where I would work on one project the whole year and we would publish that project at the end; in the other lab I would be involved in multiple chart reviews etc and I would be able to get several publications in that year (judging from previous research fellows in this lab)

Would one look better than the other when applying for residencies?

I'd do the one with clinical projects. IMO that work tends to be more enjoyable (I find being stuck in a lab miserable) and you're more likely to produce something of substance. With a basic science project, you might be screwed if things don't go well. That would suck to take a year of your time to work on something and not really have anything to show for it. Obviously you could still get a LOR if you have a good relationship with the PI, but at the end of the day you want to be able to have some things to list under your research activities come ERAS time.

The only exception I can think of is if you already have several clinical research publications, then trying to get a basic science one might make sense.

Thanks for your input! I have some of both (clinical and basic science). I agree, basic science research is much more frustrating at time. I was leaning more towards the clinical research.

Depends on the field that you're doing this for.

Basic Science is generally more respected in research heavy fields, but clinical is likely a better idea so you can get a larger volume of stuff done.
