I'm trying to figure out what fits me best: MD or DO. I like the DO approach to medicine, but I am interested in fields such emergency medicine and even trauma surgery so I don't think MD or DO will make a difference for such interests. Also, I did research in my undergrad years and would like to continue in med school and possibly after. In terms of research, is MD better? Or are there opportunities to do research at DO schools?

You can do research as a med student at a DO school either at your home program or at MD institutions. You might be limited for opportunities at a DO school but it is easy to conduct research elsewhere and get the experience and pubs you desire.

If you want a career in research as an academic physician, go MD. Absolutely no question. Some top academic programs and institutions have very, very heavy DO bias and will not consider your candidacy regardless of CV and aptitude. I constantly witness this first hand as I am very involved in research.

For clinical practice, EM and Gen Surg are attainable from either route, with Trauma obviously being a fellowship later on.

Very well put.
