Hey guys I just browsed the interview feedback section of this forum and I am glad I did Because I saw a lot of questions regarding research participation. Honestly I was not even planning to do so. However, I feel to that is important. I am a sophomore at a junior college. I do plan to transfer to a 4 year, however I would want to do my research now. Or atleast,if i can. ANybody know where i can find such opportunities?

hey! yeah...there are a lot of research opportunities in the summer! just ask around...where do you go to school? get online....and applications for those programs probably jsut started....most of these programs also usually give you a stipend and a place to stay for the summer. good luck!

I am transferring to Whittier College, in so california. However, i am majoring in economics,so i dont have direct access to the research opportunities offered by pur chem department. Thats cool, thanks for the advice. You know anything near in california?because i asw opportunites in the east(indiana, boston) im looking for something nearer. Thanks

Do you really want to do research in chemistry? Given your background in economics, you may also be a good fit for research in pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and/or outcomes based research. These fields can be just as impressive/lucrative to pharmacy schools as chemistry as these fields generally fit under the larger umbrella of pharmaceutical health services (which also have dual degree PhD options w/ PharmD) and look at "real world" outcomes of patient care and costs of care which is very impt in today's society of high health care costs. I am not sure about how close USC is to you, but you may want to check USC school of pharmacy (http://www.usc.edu/schools/pharmacy/graduate/pharmecon/).

They do have a MS/PhD program in pharmacoeconomics. I'd guess you could do the dual degree route, but may want to check on graduation time and/or you could fulfill the similar oppurtunities if so desired via fellowships in outcomes research/pharmacoeconomics after getting Pharm.D. Management may also be an option (i.e. PharmD/MBA). A search of the following organizations may also prove beneficial and may help w/ getting you started on potential contacts in the area. :

-International Society for Pharmacoeconomic and Outcomes Research (www.ispor.org)
-International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology (www.pharmacoepi.org)
-Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (www.amcp.org)

If you really want to do chemistry based research then a call to the Chemistry Dept Head's office may get the ball rolling to see what potential internships are available.

There are definately undergrad research opportunities. I worked for 1 year in a lab during undergrad. It was involved with drug design although it was considered an Organic Chem lab. I realized after that time that I did not want to continue research after graduation. If you decide it's something for you then you would want to go into a Masters or PhD program as I did my research and found it hard to get your own lab with only a PharmD. The PhD program trains you to learn how to do your own research. Good luck!
